My ds has a dimple at the top of his crack. Anyone else seen this happen. He is chunky, but not really chunky. Just curious.

My dd has this too. She had it when she was born, and at 18 months, she still has it. It is pretty cute

It is called a sacral or pilonidal dimple. Only reason I know about this is because my friend's baby had one and then I realised I have one too! hehe

A couple of links.

As long as you can see the bottom of the dimple, it is nothing to worry about. If you can't see the bottom or there is hair in it, it could get infected.

Wow I learn more here than I do at the hospital. My dd has one - I asked about it at the hospital, they didn't even mention it had a name.

My dd tells anyone who asks that that is where the doctor took off her tail :.

Her dad told her to tell people that.

My ds has that too. I assumed that was where his "tail" was.

Oh! I'm so glad to hear that my DD isn't the only one with the extra tush dimple! I've been thinking of it as where her tail was, too...

My son has one. I didn't realize that I have one, too, until I looked at my birth photos (I was a 'hands and knees' birther).

OK, I double-checked at bathtime tonight, and my DD has 2 dimples...I thought maybe my memory was playing tricks on me, but she does still have 2. Does this mean she had 2 tails? Also, when she was born, the dimples were visible at the top of her bum, but now that her bum has grown, the dimples are hidden - Is that what's happening to your babies' dimples?

Mamamarieke - That's an unexpected benefit of hands & knees birthing...I'd like to know if I have the same dimple as DD, but not even my yoga classes have prepared me to be limber enough to check it out myself...

Actually sometimes they're more than a dimple. It can be an open sinus (pilonoidal sinus). And yes, they're genetic.

My understanding is it's actually distantly connected to some genetic condition ... spina bifida, perhaps? I'll have to ask DH (we have a few pilonoidal sinuses in our house, and a dimple) which it is, maybe that SB is incorrect ...

Not to scare anybody ...

Our ped. wanted to do an ultrasound with our littlest p'l sinus when he was newborn, but we declined. DH has lived with one his whole life and it was never a problem ... but honestly did freak me out first time I noticed it ...
