the best thing for us was the video -- not the instructions but the music/sounds that are an extra feature. We tired the calming sound one night when she was tired and crying but couldn't sleep and she was out, no exaggeration, within 30 seconds. It worked great when she was young (1-3 months or so). The video was worth it for those sound clips alone. Highly highly recommend

I wait a bit with her in my arms before putting her down. And sometimes if she keeps waking up when I put her down, I put her in the swing instead so she keeps getting the movement.

Had a similar situation here... not really for longer stretches of sleep as it helped me calm dd and get her to sleep.

The one problem we've had with the shushing is that it sets my teeth on edge. DD loves it though so I just try to grin and bear it.
