Dh and i each kept our own last names. The kids have my last name as a last name and dh's name as a second middle name. This was non-negotiable to me. Dh's first, second and third wives all took his last name while they were married....and all dh's other kids had his last name. the oldest girl, who is now married, chose to trake her dh's last name, so she now has another last name.

It's funny- the opposite happened to us. The hospital gave Thalia my husband's last name, I guess by default. Even though his name appears like only once in the myriad of paperwork and mine was on every single piece of paper they had. I thought it was odd but the computer or if it's a person, then they are trained - by society or hospital policy- to give babies' their dads' last names. Then when we filled out the birth certificate, which we did at the hospital, it was with my last name. Someone from the hospital administration had to come check that this was correct since the hospital records had it differently. I was bemused by the whole thing.
