I don't know how they do it in your state, but in Missouri, we sent in a form that registers the baby's birth, and on it we had the option to automatically generate a SSN from the form, which we selected. I wonder if your state automatically does it with the BC? Sorry, I'm no help, I know . . .

In CA you have to apply if you had a homebirth and you cant do that unless you have a birth cert first.....which I am still in the process of applying for...they are so slow here!

The hospital sent in our info. I'm sure they'd at least have an address for you to contact.

our midwife submitted our birth certificate app to the state.

i picked BC up 2 weeks later at the city clerks office.

got a "note" from dr confirming ells existance , mw letter will do too.

took letter, bc, application from SA site, my license to ss office and it took about 10 minutes.

you can mail original copies of stuff in the mail and they will return them BUT i didn't want to take the chance of the original copies being lost.

Kristin I meant to mention this to you today... there was a check box on the birth certificate form that we filled out at TBC for a SSN. I think it was a state form ..not specific to TBC.

We got Ben's birth certificate in the mail pretty quickly and then the Social Security card came about 2wks later...maybe less. Ben was born on 12/4 and I know we got the card before the end of the month because my FIL was calling about it 2x/week because he wanted to set up a 529 plan for him.

HTH?

So if I didn't get a birth certificate or SS card yet do you think there is a problem? Should I call?

Yeah I think I would... especially since we both had our kiddos after you did and we have ours already.

I wonder if TBC is just really efficient when it comes to sending in forms vs the hospital??

yep, we're going through this too. plus, our county lost the birth cert form our m/w sent them so we had to re-apply in person, ugh!

either that or Chestnut hill's a mess...they tried to bill me for my co-pay & I had to have the bank send the cancelled check!

Great for birth, bad for paperwork?

so...the hospital reported the wrong address to the government. The PA Dep't of Vital Stats issued me a new birth certificate last week and I sat at the SS office for 2 hrs. today -- but we finally have a number and should have a card in a week or so.

Our hospital lost the paperwork too and we just didn't think about it till we sat down to do the taxes. We needed to have TWO forms of id for dd (her birth certificate wasn't enough on it's own) but they accepted the little "footprint" card we got at the hospital as a second form of id since it had her footprints, my thumb print, and the doc's signature. Then I needed to have two forms of id for myself (driver's license and passport) as well as my own social security card! But once I was at the SS office with the pile of paperwork the whole thing took ten minutes and the card arrived two weeks later.

I think there had been some rrecent problems with social security numbers being stolen in NY though, so that might explain the huge amount of "identity proof" they needed!

Ugh, I just found out I have to go into San Francisco to get my baby's Birth Certificate. They won't mail it without a LOT of hassle. My other kids' certificates were all mailed to me without me even asking or paying.
