For the next 30 days, the challenge is to keep track (in writing) of everything that you spend. Bills, food, gas, etc. I'm starting today because otherwise, I may never end up doing it.

There are a couple of benefits to doing this that I can see.
1) I'll be more aware of where exactly all our money is going
2) I'll be less likely to spend money that I don't have to because I won't want to have to write it down and look at it later.

After reading about how many of us don't have anything in savings, challenge #2 will be to sit down at the end of the 30 days and see what can be cut to go into savings.

I'm in!

Today: DH: 42.75 - ATM, used some of it for lunch.
Bills: AmEx: 537.55
Long Distance: 29.53 (can you tell we had a baby? and told everyone about it *grin*)
Visa: 273.09
My car - renewed registration: 43.50
Children Int. donation: 18.00
Groceries: 50.39

It drives me crazy that there's no cafeteria and no food allowed in the courthouse where he works - most days I pack his lunch, but I'm not going to make him sit in his van and eat (court's in a pretty shady, icky area so there's no place to sit outside and eat either)

I stocked up - it's cool outside and I can bake again! Cookies tonight, and rolls for DH's lunches on the agenda for this weekend! I want to try to make our own doughnuts too...never have, and we sometimes go out for those on the weekends.

today was a no spend day. Wahoo! This time of month is always a little discouraging to me, as we have to currently dip into our savings to cover our mortgage.....I know it's worth it though. What else is more important then staying home with her, right?

My dh and i started doing this kind of budgeting when we were expecting our ds. He is now 5 and we just bought a house and still have some RRSPs. Dh salery has increased a bit, but is still not what were makeing with the 2 of us working yet we have less debt and more savings.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.)0(

I SO need to do this. I am horrible at overspending. I am constantly buying stuff we don't need. Well we aren't getting paid until Friday and we are already $75 in the hole (so we have -$75) of our $200 overdraft. I have no gas so I will need to put at least $25 in the car. I think other than that we should be okay. So we will be $100 in the hole which means when we get paid on Friday we'll be starting with a $100 defecit. Sigh. We have a lot of debt. We have a mortgage of $730 a month and then we also pay $260 a month to one loan and $487 a month to another loan. It doesn't leave us a lot to live on.

Today I spent $43 dollars getting some groceries. I don't plan to spend any more today.

08/27
nothing!!

08/28
nothing!! (was treated to lunch by a friend!)

This is a good idea! Were really terrible with money, both of us talk the other into buying the things we want...resulting in a LOT of debt!! sigh...

Since we pay only with our check card we see online how much money we have and where it went to.

We finally decided to move out of the inlaws so all our money went to deposit, rent, house stuff, utilites deposit (i cant believe they make you pay upfront here) and the bank charged us $90 in overdraft chages all for $5 worth of stuff. grrrr. They wanted to charge us over $200 (they took the 50 for pending purchases and used that to pay the 2 fees and made all my other purchases overdraft as well) but I talked them out of it.

All these years I have never gone over on a debit, I actually thought it was impossible, I assumed that you would be declined if you didn't have the money in the account. I swear the banks do it to make money.

I set up our account with overdraft protection - DH isn't big on keeping up wiht how much we have/weather he can take any out! from our savings. We get charged ten bucks when we use it, but it does save us some fees. Re: the electric bill drama. Seems our house is the culprit! Last month's bill was estimated, this month's a meter reading, and they billed us the difference. That still means that the past two months have been almost 500 EACH. DH is pretty sure what happened was that the timer on our pool broke while we were away having the baby and he just noticed it yesterday - so basically the filter has been running 24/7 for almost the whole two months. He set up an interest free installment thing and they told him how to cut all the breakers to see what really is using all that electricity.

We don't have anything new that the old owners didn't have so there's no normal reason why our bill should be so high (I don't use the AC, am really careful with lights etc..... so it should be even lower) So working things out, but still frustrated. The old owners built this place themselves over two years and things work weird/break a lot....we're learning I suppose - to the tune of 60 dollar installments over the next six months. Sheesh!!!!

I didn't need this as I get ready to make the big leap to permanent SAHM status! Just makes giving up 40 K a year seem even more fool hardy. Trying to keep the faith!

Wow, I really need to be doing this as well. This would help me keep track of where all the money is going, and why I can't save any!

We're down to our last $50 bucks for this coming week. We've got bills due within the next couple of weeks, so I'm trying to arrange things so that they get paid before they're overdue.

I think I'm going to have to sell plasma on Friday.

I've been lurking around - not wanting to confess that I'm a SAHM or financially challenged :LOL .
I must confess...
8/29
$25 copay/chiropractor
8/30
$33 gas
8/31
$5 laundry detergent

Dh called to say he made $20 - someone "dared" him to move something really heavy. Am I married to a 14 year old boy? I told him to spend it on gas (I, on the other hand, cannot afford to drive).

Only 15 days until payday???? How is this possible - aack...

But anyhow -

I spent 9.50 getting digital pics developed. I saw they had a coupon but it must have been in the newspaper - I didn't see it. (19 cent prints - darn it!) Oh well. DH bought his lunch today - 10.00

I totally could have written this! I hate that we do that to each other. I'd like to join too. It's perfect timing that I saw this thread, I was just going over todays recipts :LOL

36.88 - cash out of our grocery budget for the week for fruits and veggies and some other goodies
46.29 - new clothes for dd
20.00 - copay for dh
26.75 - new tap shoes for dd At first I felt guilty for this, but then I realized that she will wear these for an entire year.
12.84 - opks and hpts at the dollar store

The winner of the day........
128.09 - sedation and ear cleaning for our crazy little shih-tzu Mr. Lilac. Crazy dog wouldn't let the vet get near his ear to clean it because he has an infection.

That leaves us with a grand total of 59.19 until the 9th plus 80 in cash for next weeks groceries. I've really found it helpful to take that money out and only have cash with me when I grocery shop. I really have to think about what I buy, and it cuts out a lot of junk that we don't need. Plus if there is anything extra we use it to rent a movie or something fun like that.

i have a question...

do i belong here? technically, i work. But i only work b/c my employer made it possible for me to work just a few days per week adn only a few hours at a time in the early am hours. DS is still sleeping at home with DH. I never thought about posting here or not, but realized some may think i am out of place. I do consider myself a SAHM, thats been my dream since i was a little girl and i am still able to stay with my babe all day and most of the night, he hardly wakes up before i'm back home. So you tell me,...am i a sahm??

anyhow, heres my $$ (or non $):

08/29
15$ at babies r us
5$ at taco bell (very embarrassed)

08/30
5$ at hollywood video
20$ atm for little bro mowing yard

08/31
15$ lunch with dh

09/01
nothing , not going anywhere today exept library..its free and only a mile away...darn gas prices......oh yeah, at some point this week, i bought gas,...cant remember the day 48$

SO that takes me through a week, not too bad but have not paid any bills for sept yet, are we posting these kinds of things? regular bills and such?

willl be back soon!!

Of course you belong Landonsmom! I'll be working one day a week from 8-3 starting next week and I've always been welcomed even though I can't be 100% SAHM right now We HAVE been positng bills. I think this challenge will be the biggest help to me because if I include EVERYTHING I can fix our budget so it actually reflects what we spend - right now it's a bit too optimistic, kwim?
