When times are really tight, (hubby is between jobs at the moment, got laid off at one stupid job, and is to start at another one in 2 weeks, we haven't started getting unemployment yet...) and everybody is trying to convince you to get a job?
I tell people the truth - it would cost more money for me to work than I could possibly earn.
If I were to go back to work, we would be paying twice as much in gas, there would be twice as much wear on our 1 car, we would have to pay for childcare, and have to start buying diapers again, because the childcare available to us will not use cloth diapers, I would most likely eat out more frequently (convenience). I would have to buy "work" clothes because I'm not as skinny as I was before I got pregnant, etc.
It just doesn't add up.
As far as me working when DH gets home, that will never be an option for us. I like spending time with my family.
I would probably give a little laugh and say it's a bit more complicated than that - implying they are silly for thinking it's that easy to cover the costs of working, accommodate the bf'ing or having to pump, etc. But you don't owe anyone a big explanation.
No, I think people would be encouraging him to go to Labor ready or some other place like that to support us.
