I am 32 today. I have been a stay at home mom for 10 months. I have 4 beautiful children and never got the chance to be home with them until now. I am loving it and don't know when and if I will go back to work. I tell my husband just because the kids are in school doesn't mean they don't need their mom. He completely understands and he's glad I have the chance to be home with them.

At 39, I had the opposite reaction. I have a hard time checking the old lady box. I feel young! My age shouldn't be the last choice!

I'm 25. I became a SAHM at 21 after the birth of my 2nd dd. I have no plans of re-entering the workforce....EVER. After the kiddos are grown and out of the house, I will be just a housewife (and hopefully a grandma). Well, that's my plan...but we never do know what the future holds.

I'm 30, and had Katie when I was 29. She came to work with me most of her first year, though, so, we didn't "SAH" until I was 30. If that makes sense. I chose 29-37 for the poll...at 21-29, I was mostly studying, partying, and teaching....not mothering, unless you count taking care of the passed out guy in the girl's toilet in our dorm....

I guess if that's how you feel about it. We are not on any sort of time frame here...and I will probably never go back to work out of the home if I can help it.
I was thirty when I had my first, and I am 34 now with 2 dc...and we are not done yet.
I think being a SAH-Mamma is a privilege and something to be happy about, no matter what age you start out.

:

Yes, the age of having a first child (and the age when getting marriage) is steadily increasing. Many people are putting off marriage and children until after college, after getting established in a career, and after saving to either pay off debt, etc. There are SO MANY articles and news reports about this.

That said, I know moms in a wide range of ages. But, most moms I know are in their late 20s or 30s, and most stay at home moms are older. They stay at home because they did the things the articles talk about.

I don't think there's any one answer about when you should have children or go back to work or stay home. I've found it's not really dependent on age; you have to be ready and willing.

Are you asking what we think is the average age of a SAHM or are you asking what age we are currently? I wasn't sure, so I didn't know.

I started staying home when I was 23 and I'm now 28. I will be staying home for at least another 10 years or so I'm sure.

Okay, I looked closer and I guess I fall into the same category for the entire time I've been SAHMing. So I voted 21-29 because that has been my experience.

I have a 12 yr old that I had when I was 18 (got pregnant when I was 17). I also have a 2 yr old and a 2 mo old. I am 31 yrs old now. I have to say that I love being a SAHM now way way way more than I did before, and for some reason, I get a lot more respect for doing it now than I did before. Its like people think I chose it this time for my kids welfare and last time I was just being lazy or something : Even the schools give me a lot more respect than they did when my son was in say kindergarten and I was "younger". Its ridiculous, but it is what it is.

Although the other day someone asked if I was my kids grandmother : ::::: I wanted to slap her, lol. I dont even have a single visable gray hair!

I'm 21 now. I've been a sahm for 4 years, starting when I finished school when ds#1 was 2 months old.

I plan on being a SAHM for a while, becasue I'm homeschooling but I don't see there being any age you are supposed to go back to work. You go back when (and if ) you are ready, regardless of age.

The OP and I are the same age and had our children within 2 months of each other. I really think we had about the perfect timing for everything. I don't even know anyone who became a stay at home mom before the age of 29. After graduating from college, I worked for 7 years and then decided to start a family. DH and I worked and saved so that when we did have children I would be able to stay home with them. I'll go back to work when the kids are in school.

I am 39 and have been a SAHM for nearly 16 years! : My youngest is only 3 (well, in a couple of weeks , so it looks like I should be here for a while longer.

BTW~ I have NO idea what I am going to do with my life when I am no longer the primary caretaker of my children.

I'm 22 now, I've been a SAHM since I was 19 and had my first. I'm glad I started young, because when the kids are gone off to their own lives I'll still feel young enough to go off and enjoy time with my hubby!

Most of my "mommy" friends are older than I am though, anywhere from 24 to 35. I think any age range is normal in today's society, many moms are starting much later than they used to. More power to them!

I know personally that I'm never going back to "work". I love this gig too much and don't want to sacrifice any time I can give to my kids. I joke with my husband that I'll just be the perpetual student:.

Glad to see such a diverse group on here!

In my area it's almost a shock to have your kids before 30. When I go into the hospital they're always like "oh you're so young! you're just a little girl!" etc. I'm nearing 25 for goodness sakes. So I really don't fit into the SAHM cliques in the area; they're all professional women in their mid to late 30's who left good-paying careers. Either that or you have the teenage moms. Nothing against them, don't get me wrong, some of the best mommies I know are the younger ones. But it's either one extreme or the other. You rarely... rarely meet someone my age who's a new SAHM. Either they go to college and establish a career first, or they jump into mothering and have one or two by the time they're 20...
