Hi, I'm wondering what the average age of SAHM's are. I turned 30 6 months ago and feel that I'm so far behind then other mom's. When your in your 30's aren't you suppose to be going back to work? instead of just starting out as a first time stay at home mom?:

Pynki 12-05-2007 09:25 PM

Well, I'm 33 now. I started the SAHM gig at 23. I'll keep this up for another 2 year or so. End up a full time college student and eventually re-enter the workforce... or not.

I'm not sure what this has to do with staying at home in particular -- are you just saying that you feel like you had children later than many other people you know? If that's the case, no, the average age at which women have their first child is steadily increasing -- in other words, first-time moms today are older than they were a generation or two ago.

I'm 32, btw, and had my first child at 29, which felt just right for me!

I'm 32 and have been a sahm since I had my first at 25.

allgirls 12-05-2007 09:55 PM

I am 41. I had my first when I was 24 but worked when she was little and when her sister was as well. I had my 3rd and 4th at 37 and 39. I have been home with them.

boobybunny 12-05-2007 09:56 PM

I am 38, and have been a mostly SAHM since I was 27.

Ruthla 12-05-2007 10:04 PM

I'm 35. I was a SAHM from age 22 (when my first was born) until I got a part time job (4 hours a week) at age 26, then I went to school at age 27, then I got sick and was unemployed for a few months, then worked part time again (10-20 hrs a week) until age 30 (when I was laid off, then I got too sick to work by the time the unemployment payments ran out.)

The girls were about 3 and 4 when I was in school full time. I was working part time before I got pg with DS and I continued to do so (minus maternity leave) until he was 9 mo.

How should I vote? My age now or the age when I started SAH?

KimProbable 12-05-2007 10:17 PM

I'm 27 and a SAHM of two years full time and five years part time before that. I won't be going back to work.

taranbabyjayden 12-05-2007 10:23 PM

27 here... I feel I had DS at the right age... I worked 2 full time jobs from the time I was 18 till 26.. 1 part time job thrown in there for the military sometimes full time when they activated me LOL.. And I went to part time school.. So becoming a SAHM was my goal when I got to have kids... I enjoy it.. I dont care how old or young a mama is, its a great experience to be SAHM and raise mine/your kids yourself.. No matter what age..

hypatia 12-05-2007 10:23 PM

I'm 30 and I've been mostly SAHMing for 3 years.

I plan on going back to work eventually, but I feel a lot of angst about it.

I believed those people at Career Day in high school who said you ought to feel fulfilled by your paid employment. And I just don't know if I can achieve that. I've disliked just about every job I've had.

Krystal323 12-05-2007 10:24 PM

i was 18 when i had my firstborn, and I've always been a SAHM. Partly due to minimal job skills, mainly due to wanting to be there for my kid(s). I'm nearly 27 now (OMG!) and am very glad to still be a SAHM

starry_mama 12-05-2007 10:25 PM

I'm 24 and have been a SAHM since I was first pregnant with my first, when I was 20.

Marcee 12-05-2007 10:29 PM

I am 32.

JustVanessa 12-05-2007 11:06 PM

26 here and plan to be for the next 5-7 years. Enough to pop out baby #2 and #3 and for them to get to school age.

Daisie125 12-05-2007 11:08 PM

I'm 26 and have been a sahm since I was 19.

lilyka 12-05-2007 11:12 PM

I didn't ote because I amn ot sure what you are looking for. i am 33 now but I have ben a stay at home mom since I was 21. i have recently re-entered the workforce (but still consider myself a stay at home mom because I am part time and it is while my children are sleeping) but am a can stacker . . not exactly a carear

Learning_Mum 12-05-2007 11:20 PM

I'm 29 and have been a SAHM since I was 26. I don't plan I ever going back to work.

marybethorama 12-05-2007 11:27 PM

but I was a SAHM most of the time from 31-42

Mommy&Will 12-05-2007 11:37 PM

I'm 37.

I chose the "29-37" column rather than the "37-55" column in your poll. :

No, I don't think so. I'm 30 now, and have no plans to go to work anytime soon. When I became a SAHM at age 23, I was the youngest mom in most of the groups I attended. At that time, it seemed most of the moms-of-babies were in their early 30s.

babywolverine 12-05-2007 11:44 PM

I'm 35, have only been a SAHM for 2 yrs. I will be about 2,000 yrs old when I re-enter the workforce

~PurityLake~ 12-05-2007 11:51 PM

I became a SAHM when I was 6 weeks shy of turning 30.

I know how you feel.

I married at 20 and never had kids with him, except one miscarriage.
I consider my first marriage a waste of my 20's.
I was *just* working full-time, not furthering my education, and not raising a family.
All that work and nothing to show for it.
That marriage lasted until 6/03, officially, although he'd left Christmas Eve, 2002.

I married in '04, had my first child in May '05: with another beautiful surprise 15 months later.

My 30's are quite full, but at times I wished I'd started earlier when I had more energy.
Or, better yet, had used my childless 20's (thought I'd never be able to have children) getting a degree in something.

I do feel like I'm starting all over again, but that is partly due to my divorce in '03, and having to start over financially, and still in the same place educationally as I was four years after graduating from high school.

oldermom 12-05-2007 11:51 PM

I'm a bit unusual. I met my dh at 40, had my dd at 41, and my ds at 43. So, I've been a SAHM since I was 41, and I'm 45 now. I had 2 careers before that. Can't imagine what I'm going to do later. Not interested in continuing either of those past careers but don't feel like going back to school, either. But that's a few years off.

yeah, you and me both.

I'm not sure why you say a woman is "supposed" to be going back to work at this age. I worked until I was 33.5 and had my first, now I SAHM to two. Most of my SAHM friends had their first around my age. Some in later 20's and some in early 40's. But mostly in mid thirties.

ChrisR 12-06-2007 12:18 AM

27. I've been a SAHM for about 5 years now.

lemurmommies 12-06-2007 12:31 AM

I just turned 28, and have been a SAHM for a year now.

MamaJenese 12-06-2007 12:37 AM

I turned 30 in april and I have been a SAHM for almost 2.5 years.

oldermom! I'm 45 too. Started SAHMing at age 32 with dd1. Seemed like the right age at the time!

mommajb 12-06-2007 12:42 AM

I just want to kiss you for making the category 29-37 and not 30-35, 35-40, etc. I feel so much younger.

I have been home for over 11 years. I am 36. My oldest is 11, my youngest is 13 weeks.
