I just wanted to give you an update to the echogenic spots that have been causing so much grief in this pregnancy.
At the 20-week ultrasound, they found the 2 spots. I was sent to a perinatology group 2 weeks later and the spots were confirmed and I was given a list of possibilities. 4 weeks later (yesterday), we went in for another 1-hour ultrasound and consultation.
The doctor told us that the spots haven't changed, haven't spread, and that the the baby's organs, bone, and growth rate are excellent. He also said he believes the spots are meconium peritonitis (a tear in the bowel causing a leakage of meconium which was then calcified to seal itself off). He believes that since this happened so early, the baby will not be affected negatively and will likely be born healthy and without complication.
Needless to say, we are ecstatic!!
We'll have to wait until she's born (edd: 3/30/06) to really be sure but for now, this good news and prognosis is a blessing!
Also, I did some background research on the doc and he's been in the field for ages, has published over 100 articles on the subject, and my co-workers know him (they're old family docs)--so, I feel pretty confident in his opinions.
