I think BFing definately helps w/burning extra calories & taking off the initial weight. For me, it was always those last 5-10 pounds that didn't come off until I was done. :

My last 10 lbs came off when dd dropped a few feedings and was eating more solids. My cycles also restarted about this time. BF helps shrink the uterus back to size and burns some calories, but your body may retain some extra fat just to make sure you have enough in storage should you get short on calories. I imagine this is an evolutionary trait. I've noticed, though, that I have to work hard to eat enough calories.
