So I had an appt. for tomorrow for the 1 hour glucose bad for you test and I told my dr. m/w's nurse that I refuse to take it. I said, "the stuff is crap and I refuse to subject myself and my baby to it." She said, hmmm, well, ok, so you don't want to take it. Well, you have to take some sort of test. How about a fasting test and I said fine. She has to get the fasting test approved by my dr., but I'm sure it will be ok. The plan is to fast overnight, and then get blood drawn in the morning. The funny thing is is that she more or less agreed with me that it's not the healthiest test and that the fasting test is a more accurate test anyway. So we'll see. Wish me luck.

My question is ... WHY do you HAVE to take some sort of test? My ob asked if I wanted to do it, I said no, end of story.

well, they never gave the option really. They never asked me if I wanted to take the test. I think it's expected, though I'm not sure if it's mandatory. I have a feeling it is. At least they are giving me the option to take the fasting test, which is good. I have not heard back, but I'll call them today.

Oooh, ooh! I know!

The glucose test is done because there is a possibility that a certain hormone will run amok. The hormone is produce during pregnancy and blocks the uptake of sugars from the bloodstream into your cells. If this is blocked, there is more sugar in the blood for the baby. It make sure your baby doesn't starve.

The hormone can go overboard and prevent YOU from getting enough sugar (glucose) into your cells. So, the test finds out how well your body takes up sugar.

The one-hour test is notoriously inaccurate (false positives for GD <gestational diabetes>).

I feel like such a pg nerd, now.

I know WHY they want you to take it (I was mistakenly diagnosed with GD my first pregnancy...) but they cannot MAKE you test any test you don't want to!

I told my MW I wanted to take the fasting test this time around because I am not comfortable with some things going on with my body...she was a bit surprised!

So how did it go?

I am currently annoyed about this. My dr (well, a tech at the office), was like here is a bottle of orange stuff, take the test at the lab. No explanation. I was mad. I asked the NP why I had to take it, she said because there are no warning signs. (well, there are, but they assume you're stupid enough to miss them since you're pregnant) I called later and said, can I take the fasting test instead? No. It's not as accurate.
Whatever. I so don't want to take this test. I mean, I'm not the best eater, and I eat artificial colorings and stuff, but why do I need to subject myself to this? And I feel like the drs office is talking to me like I'm an idiot.
whine whine whine.

Jessica,

I know, it's annoying. Actually my NP told me that the fasting test is more accurate anyway. I got the green light to take that on Friday.

I took the test with my last pregnancy becaue I had some issues and wanted to make sure. Well, the drink made me high for 3 days. I am not used to drinking that much corn syrup ever and I was just sick from it. I would not take it again no matter what. And how accurate can a test like that be? If you are not used to eating poorly, how can drinking a bottle of high fructose corn syrup NOT affect you in a bad way? My body went into shock. I was dizzy and disorientated for 3 days, not to mention really crabby. I didn't sleep well either. My 1 hour came back borderline. I declined the 3 hour. I decided just to watch my diet more closely and take chromium GTF. The only side effect that I have found with having GD is that your baby can get big. Mine was 8 lbs 5 oz. whoa- huge eh?
I think it's just another wayto get you scared into having a surgical birth or at least more intervention. Because if you are labeled GD, you are now high risk and need to be seen by a specialist. Ususally intails having an induction on or before your due date.
I will never take it again.

Homebirthmama, that's crazy! I was supposed to take the test last week but I for some reason didn't make it to the lab... Besides I'm not so sure about the orange food coloring either. Although I am not always the best eater.
I still think that anyone marginally conscientious would know if they were experiencing diabetic symptoms. I mean, yeah, I drink more water when pregnant, and I drank a lot when not pregnant, but I believe I would notice if things were off-balance.
So, I don't know if I'm going to take it. Maybe not, then when I go back to the dr on the 11th she'll ask why.
It's not like it matters if you take it past wk 28, right?

I took the fasting test on friday. I fasted overnight, did a blood draw first thing in the morning, then ate an omelette and toast, went back 2 hours from the first blood draw. I passed with flying colors. My fasting test came back at 72 and my eat then wait test came back at 75. My iron was fine, too. I really think this has to do with consumption of Nettle infusion throughout my pregnancy, plus not eating too much junk, but more whole foods.
