So we ran out of dog food the other day and won't have cash to get more until tomorrow. Luckily, I have a ton of chicken breast in the freezer and decided to do some homemade dog food until we could get some kibble.

Yesterday a.m. I had boiled some chix breasts and left the pot on the stove to let it all cool after cooking. Well naughty Bruno knocked the pot on the floor and scarfed down almost 2 breasts Needless to say, he was a little eh-em 'backed-up' from eating all that meat. Until the middle of the night.

I awoke this morning to dog poop...on the floor...in the bathroom...next to the toilet. Should I get him a kiddy potty?

At least he didn't go on carpet.

I would have just fed him the raw chicken though, it's their natural food.

Did have to toss the bath mats, but folding it all up in the mat made clean-up easier. Sorry, TMI

What about salmonella with the raw chicken?

Dog have digestive systems that are designed to eat raw meat and uncooked bones. Salmonella isn't an issue, my dogs have been on a raw diet for years and are healthier than ever.

If you are interested there have a bunch of threads on feeding raw in the pets forum.

I vote for SMART DOG!

I've known a dog that used the toilet. His owners did not train him - he observed and learned to do it himself. His owners complained that he didn't flush. Well, they drank a lot, so maybe that colored their perception.

My mom had a dog that pooped in the garbage can. It was amazing, especially because he was a border collie (not that tall), and an average-sized office garbage can.

Arduinna-Thanks! My initial thought when you brought it up was that since they have not been raised on a raw diet that their digestive system wouldn't be used to it. Kind of like a vegetarian who starts eating meat and initially get sick to the stomach (I have 'fond' memories of having sushi after being a veg for many years).

I will check out those threads

Detox from a kibble to a raw meat diet can be gross, but with my dog it only lasted one long stinky horrible day. We did subsequently bring high quality kibble on some trips where raw meat would not be readily available (middle of the bush camping) and thankfully, they were always able to transition back to the raw food with little problems.

But I agree, a raw diet is absolutely amazing for pets and my dogs lived long healthy lives.

Don't trust anyone under 5! Mom to 3 boys under 5. Blogging to save my sanity.
