This is in no way meant to diminish the fact that human beings need assistance in the Katrina emergency, but only to acknowledge that animals are in distress as well. After a day of research this is the local assistance taking donated items to disaster sites and assisting the Humane Societies and vet emergency services. I have donated to the Humane Society of the United States for their emergency vans which are going to the gulf http://www.hsus.org/ but wanted to help on a more local level too. CARA needs help with expenses for delivering items as well as pet food, leashes and collars, cat litter, feeding bowls, towels, and unopened veterinary supplies

I just signed up to be a foster mom for our local stray and rescue agency, as they are getting TONS of animals from Katrina as well. If people can, that is a great way to help.
