Do I have to get boosters for my dog? What are the laws? Can I request blood tests for immunity first, and can I trust they'll be truthful?????

In NB rabies shots were given yearly and the others were recommended to be boosted yearly. It depends who you ask. I think yearly vacs are important even if the state/province does not require it but not everyone thinks so.

I got this when I google searched this for you for Ontario:

http://www.cityofkingston.ca/residen...s/pets-faq.asp

http://www.doglegislationcouncilcanada.org/index.html
http://www.doglegislationcouncilcana...tchenerON.html

hope there is some info in it. You can email those websites probably for more info.

Please don't overvaccinate a pet. I am still dealing with vaccinosis from my poor dog for vaxxing her yearly . It has cost her not only her comfort due to sores and outbreaks, but it has cost me a lot of money. So if they'll let you get away with not vaccinating yearly and let you go every 3 yrs or just once, then go with that.

Irish, you are required to vaccinate for rabies only. Some vets will allow vaccination every 3 years for rabies (my vet for instance) That is all you're legally required to do.

That said, I vaccinate for rabies every other year and for DHPP every other year in alternating years (did that make sense?)

So rabies is only every 3 years legally? Cool.

Thanks for the links Sherra, off to check them out.

It depends, there are actually 2 different vaccines available in Canada--one is a three year and it's the most common, the other is a one year that was developed to be used in dogs and cats with vaccine reactions--but it doesn't last nearly as long (or so I've heard)
It is still legal and normal for a vet to "require" that you vaccinate every year. For instance I still get a new vaccine certificate each year from Ross, but it says that Havoc is protected until 2008. KWIM? Technically a boarder guard could figure out that the dog hasn't been vaccinated this year, but it's completely fightable--that said--a lot of vets don't do it this way.
Let me know if you want Ross's number though, he's a great vet, very laid back and he does most of his own emergency work.

Will do. I think I'll be going to the vet soon anyway. Molly seems to have a poop issue. I have a horrible feeling she's eaten something she shouldn't, and we're away this weekend without her.

We're away this weekend too, but if you don't get this until after we're gone (around noon today) give me a call and I'll give you some things you can do in the meantime.
