Our dog Maverick passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning. He would have been 12 on October 6th. My husband has had him since he was born and in a lot of ways he was like his first love and first child all rolled into one. We took him to the vets office yesterday to have him cremated and then throughout the winter we are going to take his ashes to all our favorite spots and scatter them little by little.
The house seems so quiet and empty...all of his stuff is still out, his dish still full of food. I think that I'll have to start putting it away, it's hard to see it out.
RIP Maverick

I'm sorry. Dogs are such wonderful friends. What a nice idea about the ashes.

Thanks for all the hugs. I've been cleaning the house today...it's hard to still smell him and see his hair on things. Instead of it making me mad that our house smells like dog and is covered in hair, it's just making me sad. I started picking his stuff up too, I'm sure it'll be awhile before we get another dog, so I don't think we need a dog bed and toys out. I'm just afraid that it'll hurt my husband to come home and have all of Mav's stuff gone. This has been the hardest on him...he lost his best friend. I'm trying to figure out something special to do for him as a memorial to Mav. I have a really nice picture of him, when he was still healthy...I think I might have it enlarged and framed with a little plaque with his name and date of birth and death. Do you think that is a good idea? I could get that done and present it to him on Mav's birthday.

I think I'll frame his picture with this poem. I think my husband will like that. He thought of Maverick as a member of the family, not the family's dog.

I ONLY WANTED YOU

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

It's a beautiful poem.
I think your cleaning up is nice, I know when I lost Timber years ago, I couldn't bring myself to put away his stuff--finally my mom came over when I wasn't home and put it all away I was sad, but I knew I could move on then.
What kind of dog was Maverick?

So sorry to hear of Maverick's passing - I'm sure that he is playing at the Rainbow Bridge whilst he waits for you. I love the poem you have chosen too...
