She’s gone. Her name was Scout and I always describe her on here as my Mastiffy Mutt. She was half German Shepherd and half Mastiff. She was only 7.5. I’m having a harder time than I ever thought I would. DH is a mess and I can’t make it make sense to DD. We took her to be euthanized last night. She has never been well. The last three or four weeks were hell for her. She was on several medicines and nothing was working. She couldn’t get comfortable. I was sleeping with her on her pillow and that seemed to calm her a lot. We were out of stuff to try. She was down to 92 lbs and her eyes just weren’t the same. Yesterday afternoon she came up and climbed into my lap, which she’s never done before, and just let me know she was done. She was such a sweet girl even the vet hugged me and cried a little.

That’s the gist of my post. The rest of this is just my ramblings about her.

She was never meant to be. Her German Shepherd mother (my friend’s dog) got out while in heat and got knocked up by a neighbor’s mastiff. I first met her when my friend called freaking out because one of her puppies had gotten out of the whelping box already and had her head stuck in a porcelain teapot. She was a goof from the start.

She was given to what was supposed to be a good home. The guy dropped my name so my friend let him have her. He kept her chained to a doghouse and fed her sometimes. She lived like that for eight months, until I saw her out there. I told him I was going to take his dog and he didn’t protest. In the first ten minutes I had her she had heel, sit, down, stay, and come mastered. She was attention starved.

Soon after DH moved in with me I took my German Shepherd to training and left DH home with Scout. He had never been alone with a dog before, so he thought he’d try out some of the commands he thought he heard me giving. He told her to “Splot,” which means absolutely nothing. When I got home he showed me. He told her, “Splot,” and she tried everything she knew, then ended by half-sitting, half-lying down, and trying to decide which to do. She was certainly eager to please!

She was completely submissive. She would put up with absolutely anything. When I rolled her over, she went completely limp every time. She never protested or got tense about anything. She never once needed a physical correction. She once submitted to a hot-air balloon that was flyng overhead. (I never said she was bright.)

I have a few more favorites and one or two that DH doesn’t want me to tell. (Let’s wait until he’s not home).

My all-time favorite Scout story is the day chicken happened:
Scout was quite sure that chicken materialized out of thin air. When I first started to feed her raw 6 years ago she had trouble figuring it out, so I used to break all the bones with a hammer before feeding it to her. She was in the kitchen with me getting a drink of water and I whacked a chicken wing and it zipped across the room and landed right in her mouth as she was drinking. She would not move away from the water dish for the rest of the day. She stayed in the same position, head down, watching and hoping. She never did give up hovering over the water dish. She was an optimist! If anyone said “chicken” she headed straight for the water dish. Clearly because that's where chicken "happens."

Thank you for reading. I'm just trying to make my heart feel right.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The hot air balloon made me really laugh, and the chicken! That is a riot. Actually even the pup stuck in the teapot was a hoot. What wonderful stories! And yes when dh leaves please tell us the rest

I am so so sorry for your loss. My sweet dog passed away last week so I understand those emotions. My husband has been very very upset too. It is hard to see your partner hurting so much while you are going through your own grief, isn't it?

Healing vibes to you and your family.
I do have to say that the chicken story is wonderful and made me smile!

RIP, sweet Scout.
