Today was the pups spay appt. when I made this appt I specifically ASKED how much it would be to prepare. I was told $120. fine, when I get there today they tell me its $240. So of course I question it. Turns out they added stuff like a heartworm test, and a bunch of other test that she does not really need until next month/sept. So I say if this is how much its going to be then I can not get it done today , or eles I wont be able to buy grocery this week. So the vet tells me that we can just do the heartworm test, the id chip and something eles next month. Which is fine, but now I feel like I was really put on the spot , like I did something wrong. I did detect a bit of a attitude from them.
They took my puppy away and wouldnt even let her take her friend toy bunny, or her special blanket. I dont know maybe im over reacting.
You are their client, and it's your right to veto the tests that you don't want to do. I'm sure it would be annoying if they told you one amount, and then you got there and it was something different.
I don't know if I would assume they were "mad" at you because of the way they acted in the morning, they may have been busy or something else may have been going on, who knows?
But, sorry that you had a bad experience, hope your dog does well with her spay.
I have the certificate from the rescue for her spay from when we adopted her. I understand it takes money to do this. I did apologize to them, I wasnt acting all crazy, I just said, Im sorry, I really need to know why the cost is DOUBLE from what I was told. The other thing that they where doing was taking her extra claws off her back paws.
then the vet said "well I can take the pain managment off" Um no, why the heck would I do that. I tried to tell him im not trying to be cheap , I just can not empy my bank account this week.
so shes getting her spay and the claws off.
Why declaw? Out of interest. I'm in the UK, where we never do that to dogs, and only rarely to cats.
You did nothing wrong. A business cannot misquote you by a margin of 100% and then be snarky at YOU for being unwilling to let it slide! Imagine you were in a supermarket and instead of having prices for everything the cashier just picked one when you got to the till - NOT professional of your vet IMO and i'd think about changing!

I assume that they removed the "dewclaws" (isnt that an extra toe/claw on the back of the foot or something, that is not necessary?), not declawing like some people do to their cats...maybe a dog person can talk about whether that is necessary to have removed or not?
In the UK, I am pretty sure you still take them off the BACK (except in the breeds that require them). This isn't the front dewclaw, where there's a good muscle/tendon/bone attachment; it's the back, where in most breeds that are not supposed to have them it's literally just a flap of skin with a claw on it. The back ones can tear off easily, so removing them is pretty common when the dog is under for other things.
ugh. we had a vet like that. Took the cat in for her FREE spay (certificate from the humane society) and it cost us almost $200 due to various tests and other things they did without checking with us first. When my partner demanded to know what the charges were for and why they didn't inform us ahead of time, the tech started giving him attitude saying things like "Well, most GOOD pet owners want things like x, y, and z done because…"
I've never had problems with the office we go to - which is why I go to another town to continue to go to that particular vet. Once you find one that's fantastic it's not worth switching. I think you did just fine asking the questions & telling them how you needed it to be. It's there fault for adding things without discussing them with you - I mean even if they had said "normally at the same time we like to" it would have given you an opportunity to discuss it.
Taking the back dewclaws is pretty normal. For our dog I didn't want to do it but dh & the vet insisted so we did. The vet after said she'd never seen arteries so large going to dewclaws & as many dogs will catch their dewclaws & tear them she might have been at risk for severe bleeding if we had left them.
Ah, our boy didn't have his dews on the back. He DID tear both front ones once swimming in a lake
I had to take both my socks of to bind them to stem the blood while we got him back to the car. Healed up fine, but i can totally see why the back ones would be even more of a liability.
That sounds very unprofessional. When Nelly when in for her spay a few weeks ago the assistant showed me last of various other things that are commonly done in conjunction with a spay, including a price list, and asked me to check off any that I wanted done at that time. She also discussed the risks involved with the surgery and what emergency procedures might come up in the operating room if the dog, for instance, went into cardiac arrest and what those procedures would cost. I had to sign a form authorizing those.
I can't imagine the vet doing something to my dog without my OK.
yes. i would be really irritated. My vet will often think of other things to do while we are there (save us the extra appointment) but usualy says "would you like us to XYZ while we are at it?" and he is totally cool with "nope. got no money. how long can we put that off"
I would be annoyed also. When I worked at at vet's office years ago, we always did an itemized bill over the phone and in person and gave it to the customer. We really tried to keep the owners/pet parents happy.
