Couldn't figure out were to post this. Everyone please call your congressman. We are working very hard to keep our parental rights in tact and gain back that ones that we have lost. Parents should be able to make all decisions for the well being of their child...not the Government.

Check out all the things that are happening in our Government that involve parental rights being taken away...I know some of us have already dealt with the taking away part. If we don't act we won't be able to choose school , vaccine. co-sleeping, etc. Parents with disabled children pretty much will have no say in the upbringing of their children.

Thanks.

Home Education magazine has been against this amendment, or any amendment that spells out (and esp. appears to grant) parental rights.  This is an old article, to be sure, and probably some issues have changed since then, but the basics are the same.  The consequences of losing freedom of education, freedom to not vaccinate, etc, would all be blows.  But this parental rights amendment is not the way to address it, IMO, and this particular one has the unfortunate connection with issues of spanking and other corporal punishment in the courts.  (If this article doesn't address this, I can find the sources later, but I', catching this thread on my "way out".)

Eager to hear responses.

I am not sure what you mean by court cases about spanking, but I do know that the opposite act that the UN wants to instate is very slippery slope- the rights of a child.  The rights of a child would give children the ability to make decisions about their lives at very very young ages.  It would give the government so much more say in what happens to our children.

I believe it is a parent's right to choose how to discipline, how to educate, how to feed, and how to medicate their children- up to the point where the life and severe harm of a child is in danger.  That said- I don't know about the cases you are mentioning- but if a parent chooses to spank- that is their right.

Doing some digging.  I hate noticing stuff, then having to go back and remember where I found it.  Harumph.  Still working on it.  Just got back from vacation.  Mainly it involves the HSDLA, which actively opposes the UN rights of the child, actively promoting a parent rights amendment, and their support of "parent's right" to corporal punishment of their children.  The three seem to be intricately connected.  I'll get back to you.  I'm remembering the cases were in states seeking to make spanking and similar methods of corporal punishment of children illegal.

ETA: And I respectfully disagree that parents have the right to discipline in such a way.
