Just a poll to see how long kids believe in an actual magical being named Santa who delivers presents on Christmas Eve — not "Santa, the spirit of Christmas" or the historical figure of St Nicholas. Feel free to answer for yourself and your kids. Multiple choice is allowed.

I was 7 when I stopped believing. A friend at school told me he wasn't real.

When I was a kid, I pretended (even to myself) to believe, enough that I think at times the idea almost seemed real to me, but I don't think I ever really believed.  I imagine the same is true for most kids who act as if they believe in Santa.  I never tried to convince my own kids Santa was real.

I was four when I was old enough to read the tags on the presents and I realized that Santa's handwriting was exactly like my mother's.  I didn't say anything though, probably because I was nervous I might stop getting presents :)

I can't remember how old I was when I figured it out but I do remember discussing it with friends and deciding that we'd better play along so the presents didn't decrease.wink1.gif DD1 didn't buy it at all until 5 or so, then got into it until 8. Now she loves playing Santa for her 5 yo sister, who still believes.

Stormborn, that sounds a lot like my kids. Dd1 was not into it when she was very little, but then decided she did want to believe for a year or two.

I still believe in Santa!!!  (Even if I am the one eating the carrots set out for the reindeer.)  I love watching my kids make the realization that they are Santa too and get to participate in the fun.  DD1 was 8 or 9.  DD2 just turned 9 and is just starting to wonder.  DS is still a baby . . . give us a few years and ask again.

Well I had my first Santa present (at in-law's house) at age 27. So can't vote here. I'm sure my 11 and 13 y.o. don't believe but they're just playing along. They haven't bothered to write a letter to Santa for 3 years.
