If you leave your child with a babysitter, you would leave a number where to be reached and about what time you'd be home?

I called my sis's house this morning at 9:50 and niece answered phone.
I asked her if I could talk to mom and she said she wasn't home. then I asked if she knew what time she'd be back, she said no. I also asked if she new where she went answer also no. I know leaving younger children with older siblings is ok, but I thought it would be safer if they atleast had a number to call if something should happen. I called three times and then at 1:30 she finely came home and told me."I don't need to account for my wearabouts to my children" the childrenare 15, 13, 10, 6. I hung up on her when she started yelling at me.
Was I right to be upset that her children couldn't even call her or did I over react?

I sure hope her kids know how to dial 911 -- all of them, not just the oldest.

I agree! I think it's totally okay to leave them alone at that age, but they should have a phone number to reach her! When I was left w/my sibilings, I always knew where they were going, and (this was before cell phones) I could always call my grandparents who lived 5 minutes away, as well as run next door to our neighbors. Maybe she has a "back up" plan like this?

Thanks for letting me vent about this.
I also was the oldest of five and watched my younger siblings and my grandma lived next door. I do remeber a weekend that my mom was gone and the police called to say they had my brothers and the person who came for them had to be atleast 18yrs old. I was 17 at the time. My grandma wasn't home. I had to call my friend from work to tell police she was our babysitter so they could come home that night.

Thanks again

Hi Pollyanna.

They are CHILDREN by law and must be able to contact an adult at any time, no matter how mature they are.
At times there are situations that children can't and shouldn't deal with.
I don't think you overreacted, but she probably got mad because she knew that you were right.
Maybe they should be told to call you if anything goes wrong.

Silving.
