First, a little history. I started my college career as Pre-Med, and somewhere during my first year, I decided I was not up for 80 hour weeks. Then I drifted through college, trying out everything, and landed on business - not becuase of a love for the subject (science is my first love) but because it seemed like a good general course of study that could get me anywhere. Well, now that I have a family and new priorities, I am realizing that anywhere I want to get with my current skill set (tech support/IT), requires a 9-5 M-F job.
Right now I am working 3 days per week and am beyond ready to take my son (2yo) out of daycare and become a SAHM. DH OTH is not ready to be the primary financial provider for the next 20 years. (I plan to homeschool, etc so the traditional back to work when they are in school isn't in my plan!)
So I am considering going back to school to get a degree in nursing. The university 10 mins from our house has an accerated prgram that is intensive, 16 mos long and designed for people with a degree in another subject. I would not be able to work, and it would require some time away from DS during those 16 mos. But I would come out of it with a career that can be scheduled around my family, not vice versa.
The other option is a more leisurely 2 year+ pace that would not be so intense. But it would require more debt, as we're talking 9 semesters of tuition vs. 4.
The other consideration is future children. I would start the intensive program in Aug 2004, and finish Dec 2005. If I had DC#2 shortly thereafter, it would be a 5 year spread between DS#1 and DC#2. I don't see much of a problem here, but with everyone on my case already about #2, I know this isn't common.
Decisions, decisions! Thankfully, due to my abundance of majors in college, I only have 3 courses to take as pre-requistes to the program. But since two of those are sequential, I am looking at 2 semesters of pre-reqs. I could start these this fall (Aug).
Wow - scary stuff! I am considering a complete career 180. Anyone else BTDT?
