The way a mother cares for her baby can determine how stressed out the child will be as an adult because her nurturing can permanently change the way the infant's genes operate, new studies on rats suggest.

Yes I am giving my stressed out, scardy cat kitties "rat baby tactile lick therapy" where I pet them nonstop. They like it but still run everytime someone enters teh room.

Anyway - I worry a little about these kind of studies (was another about adult heart disease starting in the womb when a women didn't eat enough nutrients). Kinda all blame the mother stuff. Like my mom should to feel responsible or guilty because I'm a nurotic freak as an adult.

Ahhh my son is 14 months I missed the licking stage.

well bummer I did this experiment 20 years ago. The pet store liked buying my baby rats because they were so friendly. I would hold no link the pinkys right after they were born. Can't remember if the mom rat was a licker.

In my past rat-breeding experience, human handling of pinkies stimulates the mother to groom them after you give em back to her. If you think about it, you might remember putting the babies and mama back together and seeing her carefully checking them all out, nuzzling, licking, moving them around etc.

OT: I wish more people knew what great pets rats can be.

I agree with the Captain!:LOL

Doctors have no problem with guilting-out moms who smoke, don't use carseats, etc. for very good reason.

Now that the info about the benefits of BFing and AP is out there, moms should feel guilty if they ignore it and therefore harm their helpless babes well into adulthood!
(And my mom should feel very, very guilty every day, either way. But she doesn't. Actually- that might be a good point. Bad moms who read this study won't feel guilty anyway! : )

My mom sent this to me with a note saying, "You're right, and science proves it!"

To which I emailed her back: "Thanks, but I don't think I've been licking and brushing ds with a paintbrush quite enough, gotta get with the program!"

Poor rats stuck in a cage with receptors attached all over their heads. Why don't scientists just observe animals in their natural enviorments. Sorry, I hate animal research. Seems cruel to me.
