Okay sorry if this is a crazy/stupid question but I tried today in the shower (I'm 36 weeks and I'm soooo curious to know what's going on down there!) and I just really didn't know what I was doing. I don't even know if I touched my cervix or not. I asked DH to check me but he's too freaked out to (sigh.. don't ask).
Any help would be great! I'm gonna see my MW on Tuesday and I can ask her anyhoo but I'd like to know if it's possible to do it myself too!

Oh - ETA that I was squatting when I tried.

There are various positions you can try - just find what works for you. Personally, I sit on the toilet to check. I have read others who said standing with one foot on the toilet worked for them. Anyway- it helps if you have a bit of a 'visual' of what you're 'looking'-feeling for. I would describe the cervix as a donut with a hole in the middle. If you've had a vaginal delivery before, you'll most likely be able to get 1 finger tip in the opening - the os. If this is your first baby, the os will feel like a dimple or very tiny slit. It feels different from the rest of the vaginal wall. It may be very soft or just slightly soft or even feel rather firm. Think of the tip of your nose - an unripe cervix, and your lips - a riper cervix. Sometimes it can be hard to reach the cervix - it changes position throughout the day and once you start checking, you will probably soon find the time of day it works best to check. For me that is at night just before bed when I am inserting EPO (evening primrose oil) capsules and/or first thing in the morning. You can check out This is a really good article that explains the dialation and effacement and tells how you can know if you feel the baby's head. Actually, if you are feeling for the cervix along the vaginal wall and you come to place where you can feel this hardness in the vagina you may very well be feeling the baby's head and the cervix will be close to that. I find that my little guy moves around enough that sometimes his head is more on one side than the other and sometimes I can't feel it at all. So, that means that even though he's low, his head is not yet engaged in the pelvis - he's floating. Anyway- I hope that helps!

I can't reach mine, either, even when I'm not pregnant. I know that right now mine feels really mushy, like lips, and is a couple of cm open. Mine is also rather posterior right now, which makes it harder to reach.

My DH has checked it a couple of time, at my request, but it was hard to describe to him since I had never felt it myself. (Once at 30 weeks when I lost my mucus plug, then again last week - I was curious because I have a history of preterm labor.) At our 36 week home visit on Saturday my midwife showed him how to check it in case I get curious again. She also said I have a very long vagina, which may explain why it is hard for me to reach it.
