Does walking really help labor start? - Mothering Forums

I've been walking and doing yoga pretty much my whole pregnancy but these last few weeks I haven't done hardly anything. Now I'm wondering if I should start up walking again to help things move along. Or does walking even help get labor started? I've heard mixed opinions. Thanks, Katie

that's what I've heard as well.. however I'm pretty active (yoga, walking, swimming, etc) and still haven't had any BH or anything at almost 39 weeks.. so who knows.

Brisk walks around my neighborhood have always brought on more BH contrax at least. My midwife also encouraged it.

One of the reasons walking helps is because it is MOVEMENT. You would/could do the same thing by sitting and rocking on your birthing ball--you are using gravity and movement to get that baby down into your pelvis, the head onto your cervix to start working on opening.
If you aren't in labor, walking is still good to just keep your muscles 'active' and strong and to keep you in moderate shape since labor is hard work!

Having said all of that--our bodies are pretty amazing...and even very sedentary people can have quick labors, can get thru labor, and may even have an 'easy' labor. SO...I say, do what you can, don't overdo anything...listen closely to your body, and let it happen at it's own pace!

I agree with pp. Movement helps of any kind to keep you limber and strong and help with gravity to get baby into position. Plus even a short walk and light yoga stretchng can help you just feel better in the last days, or at least it did for me. Listen to your body and breathe

I've started taking shorter walks and that seems to be less exhausting. Ever since I cut way back on my walking and yoga my hips and lower back have started to hurt, something that I have pretty much managed to escape from this pregnancy. So it looks like I'll get back to moving. I was a little nervous that it would get things going before I was ready but I only have 6 days till my "due date" so I'm feeling quite ready.

Mrs Hos I'm glad you mentioned the birth ball. I was sitting on it yesterday and rocking on it, so I'm glad to know this helps too! This is my third baby but I feel like its my first!

As I've been told, every baby is SO different (pg is different, labor is different etc) it probably feels like your first anyways! ME TOO!!

I dont know if walking helps labor get started....it can help labor progress.
