So, Jareth has decided that biting Momma is FUN! I happen to disagree. He very rarely if ever bites anyone else. Both Grandma's have been bitten once and a stern "No, that hurts Grandma" has stopped him from ever doing it again. Daddy stopped him from biting with saying "No" a couple times. Guess what happens when I tell him no? He Laughs. And I'm not talking a little grin or even a chuckle. His nose scrunches up and half the time he leans his little head back and he LAUGHS. Oh my goodness, it drives me batty. He's bruised my arm where he's bitten me several times. It was something that just happened once or twice, but now it is becoming a daily thing. Here is what I have tried so far:

Saying No and putting him down on the floor.

Saying No, that hurts Mommy and looking very sad.

Screaming in pain (couldn't help it - his little fangs are sharp!)

Yelling No quite loudly.

Saying nothing and putting him down

Rolling over (if in bed) or walking away from him, with and without a No

Spanking him - not hard, but just a little firm butt tap. It made me feel like absolute crap and still didn't work.

Giving him a toy or something that he is allowed to bite on

Nothing has worked and it is driving me batty. I simply don't know what to do. Any advice, ladies?

I think the key is consistency. You have to do the same thing - pick nearly any of the things you listed, bar the spanking, and do it, repeat ad nauseum. my 13 month old has bitten me a couple times while nursing - I say no biting and put the boob away. Now, he will walk up and bite our toes (why I have no idea) thus far it is still kind of funny so we aren't very good at discouraging that.

I think part of it is at this age they forget really easily, especially in the heat of the moment (right now we are working on gentle touches as opposed to smacking - DS to us, not the other way around) and it is finally starting to sink in a bit. And still he will be gentle for a minute, get excited or distracted and start whacking away again. so I guide his hand and show him a petting motion for touching gently.

I find that showing him what he CAN do as opposed to what he CAN'T do helps alot. when he was biting while nursing, I said no biting, just suckling, and repeated that every time he went to nurse. Can you say to your DS, No Biting mama, but you can give me a hug or a kiss? I used to babysit a little girl who liked to give love bites - she did it as a gesture of affection, not of intention to hurt.

Hope some of that was helpful.
