I am nursing my 3.5 month old and plan to do so for several more months. I had the Mirena IUD placed two weeks ago and am experiencing the side effects of spotting, low back pain, sore hips and pelvic swelling. I would like to know what other nursing moms are doing for birth control - specifically the mini-pill and diaphram. Any side effects with the mini-pill? etc. Thanks in advance.

Side effect from the mini-pill: pregnancy. I was just doula at a birth for a "mini-pill" baby. And a close friend of mine has just discovered she's pregnant after being on the mini-pill. Her baby is only 5mo old.

The mini-pill *can* cause a drop in supply. Most doctors will claim that this is not so, but there is loads of anecdotal evidence from mothers who have experienced it that the mini-pill can negatively affect supply. Progesterone suppresses lactation. It's a matter of how sensitive a mother's supply is, and you can't know if you'll be one who has a supply drop until you try it, so there's a risk there.

Have you considered combining a barrier method with fertility awareness?

I took the mini pill after my first, I didn't notice a drop in supply, I had really bad ppd but I don't know if that played a part in it or not : I was still taking it (correctly) when I discovered that I was preg with DS#2 at about 16 months pp - I had not gotten my period back yet so it was a great surprise to us. Other than that - I liked the pill.

That being said DS#1 was conceived when we were using condoms (it did not break or slip or used incorrectly) and DS#3 was conceived using the Yaz pill - also used correctly. so clearly I don't have a good track record with ANY birth control.

You must take the mini-pill at the exact same time every day. If you do its 98% effective, if you dont its about 85% effective. I had a little moodiness my first month on the mini-pill and I dont get my AF anymore. I take a HPT every month to make sure I am not pregnant. I had way more side effects from the combo pill like migraine and weight gain so the mini pill was a nice change for me. I have taken 6 packs and am pregnancy free. I have friends that have been on it 1 year+ and are pregnancy free. Its just really likely to fail if you even miss your pill time by an hour or 2. My supply did not drop while on it.
