I've now nursed 4 babies. They've self-weaned at 2 years, 14 months, my 3yo still nurses for a few seconds a day, and my 18mo is nursing several times a day.
Two of my children were born with a heart-shape tongue and were tongue-tied and had it clipped, which seemed to improve latch but ALL 4 of my children have NEVER latched on in a comfortable latch that does not cause me pain/discomfort.
I visited several very good lactation nurses who all did their best, all said I was latching my child on correctly, open mouth, etc.... but I have found that my babies are clamping down or "biting" me, cutting off circulation and my nipple ends up white. My babies are very stubborn and will also re-latch themselves if I've gotten them on correctly. I suspect my flow may be very fast and it's their way to control it at their pace but I am not certain.
My, now, 3yo I had to have her latch herself on my stomach to stomach because her latch was so horrible and she didn't want to open, etc... so I've tried all sorts of different "tactics", LOL.
I am due in September with another baby and so much would like to enjoy nursing him or her for once! I plan to meet with a very experienced midwife who happens to live nearby, as everyone has told me she is so skilled at helping with these types of issues. I am very much hoping she will be of good help when the time comes!
Rachel, mom to 6 children.
