Breastfeeding and PKU

Hello, my name is Tara and I'm currently studying with Childbirth International to become a breastfeeding counsellor. As part of my studies, I am hoping to talk with someone who has personal experience either breastfeeding or attempting to breastfeed a baby with phenylketonuria (PKU). If you have experience with this and wouldn't mind answering some questions via email, please either respond here or PM me.

Thanks for your time,

Tara

I can help you!
I am a breastfeeding mama to my 9 month old. She was diagnosed with PKU three days after birth. I can answer questions publicly so they may help others if you wish. I am also an RN.

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner. I haven't been receiving notification of updated threads, and I didn't think to check back until now.

I just wanted to acknowledge that I saw your reply. I will post my questions soon. Thank you again!

Tara

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Would you mind telling me a bit about your daughter's initial diagnosis?

In the beginning, what did you find most challenging about breastfeeding your newborn?

What did you find most surprising about breastfeeding her?

For how long did you breastfeed (or are you breastfeeding still?) For how long would you like to breastfeed?

What information would you like to have had before your baby was born that would have helped you with breastfeeding?

What breastfeeding problems or issues did you have because of your daughter's PKU? Were you supported in your decision to breastfeed?

What suggestions would you pass on to other women in a similar circumstance?

I really appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Tara
