Hi! I'm new here - the recent article on 'natural breastfeeding' is actually what brought me to this site! (can't post a link because I am too new, but if you google Mothering.com Natural Breastfeeding it will come up). Has anyone had success with this method?
La Leche League also calls this "laid back breastfeeding." It was the only position that worked for me early on, when we were otherwise having a lot of trouble with latch and suck.
I highly recommend it to moms in my practice (I'm an IBCLC). It's a bit hard to get the hang of, in an office setting, but in your own home, it seems pretty awesome. Just remember to grab a stool for your feet!
Yes, @MilaMar - "laid back" or "natural" breastfeeding is a wonderful method for starting out! We recommend this to new moms as well. (I'm not an IBCLC, but working on accreditation as a LLL co-leader)
I first used it at the birth center where I birthed my last 3. Just after birth, the midwife helped me into bed and placed some pillows behind my back so I could sit up at an incline, with baby skin-to-skin on my chest...the babies naturally found their way to the breast and latched on. I assisted just a tad by pushing my nipple toward their mouths, but that's it, very easy and stress-free. Fun fact: your nipples smell like your amniotic fluid, so it's a familiar scent that the newborn is naturally attracted to, and they will do their sweet little "breast crawl" over to it. :love
I'd say it would be easiest to begin this at home, either in bed with pillows at your back, or in a rocking chair with a footstool. Skin-to-skin is best: baby undressed to their diaper, and you can open up a button-down shirt or just go shirtless with a blanket over you & baby. This way, you are totally relaxed, which helps your let-down reflex immensely...not to mention, prevents the neck & upper back pain many nursing moms experience. It's a great approach - hope it works out well if/when you try it!!
