Blood Clot in Breastmilk

I had a weird issue while pumping today. After about 30 mins (my usual time), I looked down and noticed the milk from my right breast was pink. I've passed a little blood into my milk before, so I wasn't too alarmed. But when I looked at the bottle more closely, I could see there were numerous red fleshy clumps settled at the bottom of the bottle. In particular, one was approximately the size of a quarter.

What. The. Heck???

I've been pumping/bfing with no problems lately. If anything, my milk supply has been slipping and I'm trying to bring it back up...so no overly full breast/mastitis issues.

This was shocking.

Any idea what's going on and what I should do about it?

Subscribing.

See a doctor.

This happened to me years ago with a breast horn - you know, it looks like a bicycle horn.

Make sure you clean the pumping mechanism very well.

I simply stopped pumping, and never had another problem, but still ...

That was my first guess, if you had any cracked nipples. I was told pumping and causing some bleeding and it's prefectly normal. It's safe for the baby to drink. Again, that's just what I was told.
But that's never happened to me.

It wasn't a cracked nipple. I've had that. I've even had blood in my milk before, but this was different. I threw out the milk because the blood clots were just too large. I went right back to pumping later that day and have not seen a drop of blood since. Baffling, but I consider it resolved.

Ooowee I know about that yes I do. My wife used to smoke every day when she was breastfeeding. Granted she was only 12 so we're not sure about the health benefits yet. But it worked. My baby is a genius
