I have an opened bottle of commercial Kefir in the fridge. It's expiration date is 12/11/09. I want to use it in a recipe to replace buttermilk (that I don't have right now either, ha)... Smells fine, tastes fine. Toss it or use it? Thanks

Hi, Jamie! Wow - I'm in nothern VA, too - we're in Sterling.

I'd totally use it. BTW, if you're interested in kefir grains, pm me! I've just started culturing them less than 2 wks ago, but once they grow enough I'll gladly split them!

it keeps a really long time past the expiration date. Hell, I would still drink it, so it's definitely ok for baking!

Hey there- I'm in Charlottesville.

It's probably fine as long as it tastes and smells all right. I've had one open in my fridge for nearly two weeks now because I soak my daughter's oatmeal every morning and only use a tablespoon.... I smell it every time but I figure it's fine...

It's probaly good until it grows mold.

Where does one buy kefir grains and how do you use them?
