Hi everyone,

Do you have a good recipe for a healthy smoothie that does not have cow's milk in it?

I usually make mine with a mix of fresh and frozen fruit (best with banana plus berries - either can be the frozen component), baby spinach and water, but don't know if that's what you were looking for? Maybe subbing coconut milk for the dairy milk would work if that fits with your dietary considerations.

Can you do goat milk instead of cows?  We use raw goats milk kefir (home made) as our base.  We add beets, carrots, spinach (or another green leafy), apple, banana, avocado sometimes, berries, peaches, anything that we've got pretty much :)

banana plus frozen berries plus grapefruit juice = yum!!!  We sometimes add a little yogurt to them, but for DD1 who is dairy free, a little cultured almond milk or half an avocado works for creaminess.

 

now I want a smoothie! :)

I use coconut milk as my smoothie base (either homemade from shredded coconut or Native Forest brand, which is the only canned brand right now with no BPA).  I add a couple of berries (literally like 3-4 blueberries) and some avocado for creaminess, and if I'm replacing a meal I'll add in a tablespoon or two of coconut oil as well, maybe an egg yolk or two.  It's full of awesome fat, not sweet, super delicious and satisfying.

It is not exactly a smoothie but is a good drink: fresh vegetable, fruit juice with raw egg yolks. I like to do something like: celery, carrots, cilantro, asparagus, bell peppers, cucumber, spinach and apple. Then I add 2 raw egg yolks and shake it up. It is pretty tasty and super nutrient dense.

I really need to try coconut milk as a base - those sound delicious! A very refreshing combo for summer is frozen strawberries plus fresh watermelon. It makes a great slushie.

Here's the recipe for my new favorite smoothie. It's a slight alteration of this one from Melissa d'Arabian. The amounts listed below make 1 smoothie and total about 300 calories.

 

1 cup vanilla almond milk

a few ice cubes

3 slices frozen (or fresh, or canned) peaches

1/2 a banana

1/4 cup oats

2 tsp. honey

2 cups spinach

 

Yum! I've had it every day for a week and I'm still in love with it -- I get excited to have it every morning! The oats make it filling -- I don't get hungry until lunchtime, and I'm usually hungry by 10:30. I might add a little PB one of these days to give it more protein, but for now I love it just the way it is. 

 

ETA: I've never used an actual recipe for smoothies before -- I usually just throw in some combo of yogurt, fruit, and veggies. They always taste fine, but this one is light years better than any other one I've made. It makes me want to get a smoothie recipe book!

I like to start my breakfast smoothie the night before. I put some flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds in the blender with some water and let them soak overnight. Then in the morning I add my veggies, frozen fruit and almond milk, blend it and it is ready to go.

1 banana
16 ounces frozen fruit
8 ounces greens (spinach, kale, spring mix, chard)
Squirt of flax oil
Spoonful of coconut oil

Add more liquid of you're having trouble getting it blended.

If I'm adding a raw egg (rarely do), I mix it with the coconut oil before I dump it in.

sounds good, but you really use 16 oz of frozen fruit?  seems like a lot

 

don't know if this counts as a smoothie, but works for me (also a good weight gainer for my son)

3 tbs nut butter (i can afford peanut butter so I use that)

 

blend with immersion blender.

I've also used chocolate in there as well. pretty good.

This is similar to what I've been doing! As a weight-gainer for skinny kid plus as a super caloric booster for me after I've done a strenuous workout.

I don't measure, but, it's about:

1 frozen banana
1/2 cup peanut or almond butter
1 spoonful cacao powder
3/4 cup coconut milk from can
Sometimes a sprinkling of sunflower or pumpkin seeds
Sometimes vitamin powder or a bit of hemp protein powder
Enough almond milk to thin it down
