How much cod liver oil? When deficient? When pregnant? Experienced mamas, please reply! - Mothering Forums

I just got some cod liver oil, fermented, from Green Pastures.  I tried 1tsp today and WOW this stuff is INTENSE!  I felt it in my body almost immediately.   

 

How much should I take daily, accounting for the fact that I will also regularly be eating chicken livers and that I believe I am suffering from Vit. A deficiency?  

 

My second inquiry is more of a concern...has anyone taken CLO during pregnancy and had a positive outcome?  How much did you take?  All my vegan friends are very concerned about me and all this Vit. A but I am sure I'm deficient!  I am not pregnant yet but hope to be soon.   Any guidance with CLO and pregnancy appreciated!  A well as thoughts as how much I should take pre-pregnancy.  I'm just wanting some guidance because wow, this stuff is strong.

I've taken large doses of FCLO throughout all of my pregnancies. It's vital for optimum brain development.

 

Here are the current dosing guidelines:

As a general guideline, we recommend the following doses of vitamin A from cod liver oil, along with a nutrient-dense diet that contains other vitamin A-rich foods:

  • Children age 3 months to 12 years: A dose of cod liver oil that provides about 5000 IU vitamin A daily, obtained from about 1 teaspoon of regular cod liver oil or ½ teaspoon of high-vitamin cod liver oil.
  • Children over 12 years and adults: A maintenance dose of cod liver oil that provides about 10,000 IU vitamin A daily, obtained from 2 teaspoons of regular cod liver oil or 1 teaspoon of high-vitamin cod liver oil.
  • Pregnant and nursing women: A dose of cod liver oil that provides about 20,000 IU vitamin A daily, obtained from 4 teaspoons regular cod liver oil or 2 teaspoons high-vitamin cod liver oil.

Please note that these recommended doses are 2-5 times greater than the U.S. RDA for children, 4 times greater than the U.S. RDA for adults and 8 times greater than the U.S. RDA for pregnant women. The RDA values are based on studies conducted in the general population, which is now recognized to be largely deficient in vitamin D. For a discussion of studies showing that vitamin A consumption up to 30,000 IU per day by pregnant women does not result in a greater risk of birth defects, see Vitamin A for fetal development. This article also describes the vital role played by vitamin A in the development of the fetus. Pregnant women may wish to consult their health practitioner about taking cod liver oil during pregnancy.

Individuals under stress or wishing to use cod liver oil to treat a disease condition may take much larger doses, even up to doses providing 90,000 IU vitamin A per day, for a period of several weeks.

This is kind of a sensationalist blog post, but it does provide some info and some links about FCLO. It's perfectly safe during pregnancy and in fact is really great for you and baby! :)

My daughter developed mild Vitamin A toxicity on 1 tsp a day, so we just dialed it back. I wasn't happy about it, but I also recognize that Green Pastures never claimed to be exact about this stuff. They can't tell you 100% how much Vit A is in a dose. But our girl's body let us know. I think the best thing you can do is start with a low dose, work your way up to recommended dose, and wait a month or two to get pregnant. Your body will let you know in that time if it is too much.

Can you tell me more about this? How old is your daughter? How long was she taking the clo? What symptoms told you she had vit a toxicity? I ask so I can watch out for this in my son. He takes 1 tsp a day.

Oh, sure. She was 8.5, but small for her age. She is petite. She had been on it for about 3 months. She was having a lot of chronic health and gut stuff going on and was also getting liver. She had some skin symptoms and angular cheilitis develop that wasn't due to B levels, Iron, etc.

It was all fairly mild, and her very non-alternative ped wasn't worried about it at all. We just stopped, and her body went through its stores, and we have given it to her in smaller amounts and less frequently since then.

My girl is a bit of a weird outlier. But the CLO was a natural source of A, and her body told us, "Hey, this is a bit too much for me right now." Symptoms resolved within 2 weeks. It was a lesson that we are all a little different smile.gif.

If you're starting FCLO mid pregnancy is it safe to start with the full 2 tsp or should one start at like 1 tsp and work up?

Is vitamin a toxicity an issue with a product like Nordic naturals clo that has no added vitamin a? Are there any other concerns aside from vit a when exceeding the recommended dose?

Nordic naturals says that there is approx 650-1500 iu vit a per tsp of their clo, and that non-synthetic vit a is much less likely to cause toxicity.

I don't know about Nordic. Dave (owns Green Pastures) started making the fermented CLO because of how the cod was handled out at sea after it was caught. He said that the synthetic vitamins were added then, so he couldn't figure out how any of these companies were claiming not to use synthetic vitamins. He found a way around it by having the cod sent to him on land and then he fermented the livers himself (this is why each batch has varying amounts of vitamins A & D - makes ya wonder how Nordic knows exactly how much is in each bottle..)

I appreciate all the replies!  I am now pregnant (9 weeks!) and still taking FCLO.  I find myself not wanting to take as much as I was (I was taking 2tsp a day before pregnancy) so some days I take 2tsp and some days I take 1tsp and on days where my nausea is particularly bad I skip a day.  I hope to take it all throughout my pregnancy and when I get out of the first trimester start taking it super regularly again.

Are you taking butter oil for the K2 with it? It helps to get everything where it needs to be (in bones, not arteries/organs.)
