I bought some dried wheat berries at the local farmers market, and started soaking them yesterday afternoon. When I changed the water this morning, I noticed that the sprout end is very dark brown/black on some of them (maybe 5%). I'm not a wheat berry expert, but I've done this a handful of times and never noticed this before. The dried berries look dusty gray at the tips, but otherwise normal. Is this mold? Dirt? The soaked berries almost scorched at the tips. Not sure whether to pick out the worst looking ones and cook them up or just toss the whole bag. Thanks in advance!!
I'm not the expert either but I'd say sniffing and tasting the grain is a good test. If it looks good, smells clean, and does not taste bad, then I personally would bake with it.
