You can either make kefir using starter grains that you get from the healthfood store (but these are only cultures and can't be reused very long, I don't think), or you can use live kefir grains. The live kefir grains reproduce and can be reused indefinitely. Someone on the mothering board who has extras can ship some to you for the cost of shipping.
