Hi all,

I soaked, rinsed, rinsed, and rinsed some chickpeas over the past 2-1/2 days hoping to use them sprouted in some homemade hummus.

Now they smell like baby poo. Are they bad?

Thanks,

Heya, I know this is probably several days too late, but I just sprouted some chickpeas for the first time the other day. Mine smelled like baby poo too! However, the smell went away after I cooked them, and they made a terrific hummus.

Here's the recipe I used:
2 heaping cups cooked sprouted chickpeas
scant 1/2 cup roasted tahini
scant half cup lemon juice
1/3-1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons water
1 big clove garlic, smashed up
1 teaspoon salt

I just let it run in the food processor for a good long time. It starts out reallllly chunky, so you really have to let it rip for awhile before it gets smooth.

Oh yeah, my chick peas always stink after a soak, too. They're fine after being cooked, though.

Darn, I went ahead and threw them out. I did wait another day or so and rinsed a bunch during that time hoping the stench would leave. I kept them in my oven during that time and the oven still stinks!

I'm glad to know that stinky is good b/c I have enough for about 10 batches of hummus. I thought the Mediterranean deli sold me a bad bag of chickpeas!

Thanks, mamas!
