I was able to unexpectedly get a gallon of raw milk. I am new to NT, but I want to do something useful with some of it other than just drinking it straight. Is there anything I can make without having to buy something else? I wanted to make kefir, but those require starter grains. Are there any starters that I can make with just the milk?
Please forgive my ignorance!

You can make cream cheese and whey by pouring some in a jar, covering and leaving in a cool dark place. Wait a couple days and the cheese will be in top and the whey on the bottom. You can use the whey for lots of other things and just eat the cream cheese.

You can make butter, search here for how to do it, I've never made it before.

Enjoy your milk!!!

You can make lots of yummy things...pudding, smoothies, custards, yogurt, ice cream (if there is lots of cream). We use it to soak grains. Epecially baked oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, etc....YUMMY

I just put my milk away in the corner to make some cream cheese and whey (I want to use the whey to make mayo - it lasts longer if you use whey in it). I also make butter with my cream. My cream comes separate from my milk - you just throw it in the food processor for a few minutes, when it hardens, pour off the butter milk (make sure you SQUEEZE it all out!), rinse it with some water, pat it dry and voila! You've got butter! You want to make sure to get all the butter milk out so it doesn't spoil.

I've also been putting the milk I get that goes bad (just a little bit left each week) into ds's baths to help ease his dry winter itchy skin. Seems to really help!

Good luck!

PS This is the first time I am trying the whey/cream cheese making. If I remember, I will post here to let you know how it goes!

edited to say, GO BUCKEYES! BEAT GATORS! !!

If you only have a gallon I wouldn't make anything with it. It would be used only for drinking.

I start cooking and making things with real milk when I have extra.
