I'm feeling a little bit worried about my SCOBY! A little bit of background: Got my SCOBY from a friend and have brewed two batches successfully. My parents really liked it and I had two thick babies on top so I split my mother and the two babies: put the mother in one vessel and the two babies in the other. The vessel with the mother is done, but the vessel with the babies in it still has a long way to go. For a long while they were sitting sideways in the vessel. A few weeks ago it looked like the vessel with the two babies in it actually had two new babies - one just on top of the new mother and one on top of the vessel.

It seemed like the mother was floating sideways b/c there was some air trapped between the two layers. I wanted to help her along a little so using a very clean spoon and very clean hands helped to right her. It seemed like everything was ok, but then tonight I was checking on it and it looks like there may be mold! I've seen several pictures of mold out there on other sites and from what I've understand if it's mold then it will look like the fuzzy bread mold kind.

What I've got doesn't look like that at all. BUT, it's definitely odd and could possibly be fuzzy mold between the two new babies. I peeled off the two new babies tonight (again keeping everything really clean) and it's definitely something between the two. The bottom looks completely normal SCOBY-ish. I just decided to throw out the new babies, but left the mother there (they weren't even really "attached") in the vessel to keep going on the off chance that everything is ok.

SO...can you look at these pictures and let me know if you think I should just dump the entire second vessel - SCOBY and all? Or is it nothing to worry about.

I have no idea, but I am interested to see if anyone knows!

It does look unusual, from my limited experience.

It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures. It could be or couldn't be mold. I would try to touch that white bump and see if it's hard or soft. If it's really soft and kind of fluffy and comes off easy, then it's mold. If it's hard then it's a blemish on the scoby. My scobies have had their share of scary looking phases, and when I'm worried, I feel them to make sure.

It was a hard bump. I remember that distinctly!
