I'm fairly new to the raw vegan lifestyle. A few months ago, I read David Wolfe's book, The Sunshine Diet Success System. After that, I dived into the world of raw vegan living. I ended up juicefeasting for 43 days and lost 40 pounds (www.juicefeasting.com). I've read Alissa Cohen's Living on Live Foods, and I've been slowly working toward living 100% raw. I've had many slip-ups and need much more support which is why I started this thread!!

I am just starting out with raw foods. Not looking to go 100%, at least not at this point... just incorporating a lot more raw foods into my day. Lunches have been primarily raw lately, and I've been doing a lot of raw snacks. I've been veg. for years, but we have recently gone gluten-free and dairy-free as well. While browsing for new food ideas back in July (when we started the new diet) I kept coming across raw food sites/recipes, and it really appealed to me. I am loving the recipes on http://rawon10.blogspot.com/ and am waiting for some books from the library I'm also looking at some e-books on raw recipes for kids, esp. about packing school lunches which I need to start doing next week for my oldest!

Also have recently gotten into green smoothies!

I'm loving the green smoothies too! DH always asks me to make enough for him. DD1 will drink some too. I just ordered a bunch of ebooks from www.thegardendiet.com. I'm going to come back to this thread in a bit and check out the website you linked. I love getting great ideas. I think half the battle with any diet is just thinking and imagining where you want to be.

Well, I was 100% raw vegan a while back, but lost soooo much weight even though I was eating lots of nuts and avocados. I just couldn't sustain it.

Now, I just try to get in lots of raw fruits and veggies. I try to eat breakfast and lunch raw, especially in the summer when the pickings are good!

I tend to be a mono-eater when doing raw, except for salads.

Wishing everyone a beautiful journey, whatever dietary path they take!

I eat breakfast lunch and all snacks raw. Dinner is usually cooked with maybe raw sides. And always vegan I love eating this way I have so much more energy and feel so much happier

i was 100% raw before having both of my girls, but ended up have cooked and dairy cravings with both, so out went the raw, but i am back to eating a ton more raw. we do tons and tons of green smoothies. i do a quart jar every morning and the girls both get a green smoothie for breakfast plus sprouted grain toast or cut up fruit. we gnosh on larabars, green bars, tons of fruit and greens and pretty much anything that we can grow during the season.

i guess that my best advice is to listen to your body. speed up the raw when it feels right and slow it down when your body is asking for a bit of cooked food. i still love cooked beans and rice, but i now take an HCL/digestive enzyme with it. we make our own veggie burgers out of oats, sunnies, greens and some other goodies and these are our addition to salads. my other advice is to NOT eat much nuts. they are exceptionaly hard on the digestive system. do them in moderation. it is easy to really eat nuts because they are so filling, but you may notice bloating and discomfort if you keep it up.

enjoy and i can't wait to hear others thoughts on this topic.

i love raw foods and there is no better time than summertime to totally get into them. enjoy!

ps (since doing a cleanse, a colonic and tons of raw food i am now 5 pounds less than my pre-pregnancy weight and my little one isn't even a year old yet.

That's really tough with those parameters! I'd say sprouted quinoa (a pseudograin), soaked oatmeal (technically a grain but doesn't disagree with some people the way, say, wheat or rice might), and seeds like sunflower, pumpkin, and especially hemp (which is very protein rich nd is a complete protein). Spirulina also has a high protein content that is complete, but it's hard to eat a lot of spirulina. Oh! And nutritional yeast! Also high protein content (like, 8 grams in 1.5 tablespoons)

(can I possibly use any more parenthesis?)

Ah, thanks! I forgot that I bought some raw sunflower seeds for this very reason. I was looking for pumpkin seeds, but couldn't find them raw yet. You reminded me of the seeds. Thank you!

The 'filling' in the recipe is the ganache. =)

Ah, okay. We've had a very similar looking dessert in the past (although not raw or vegan!) that had the crust, the filling, and then ganache on top, so I just thought this would have the same # of layers.

I went on a raw vegan diet for two weeks and really noticed a difference. I felt good and healthy. As my son started kindergarden and my daily routine changed somewhat, but I want to go back to raw, because I noticed that it's good for me.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this maybe it's a bit squeamish of a subject, but I really want some answers. I've been going more raw for about a year now and I have some "womanly questions". My husband started me on green smoothies and eating more salads and raw foods when in my second trimester of pregnancy last year. We eat about 60-75% raw now.

I've read that when a woman starts eating a mostly raw diet she'll have lighter, more infrequent periods (http://www.greensmoothiegirl.com/blo...gular-periods/ and http://debbietookrawforlife.blogspot...-are-they.html ) This seems to be something of a controversial idea, so I'm just trying to find out some more information. I'm breastfeeding an 8 month old and haven't noticed my period return (he's still waking once a night). I was charting my cycles before he was conceived so I'm wondering now if my fertility signs might change some, especially cervical fluid? Do raw women have less, more or same amount of cervical fluid? How can you tell if you're pregnant on a raw diet? Any info anyone can give me on this would be very much appreciated. =)

Nicky, thanks for the link, really interesting. I had very irregular periods my whole life and had researched the modern view of menstruation with interest. It has been my experience with raw vegan eating that my menstruation became much lighter and I stopped having any cramping or PMS. I only spot for 2-3 days now and barely need to wear anything. I only own a few cloth panty liners and find that plenty. I had PCOS, I ovulated a couple times a year and then bled very heavily but after being raw started ovulating much more regularly. Also while raw my libido goes way up and I tend to get more fertile CM during my cycle. It will be interesting to see if my bleeding becomes even lighter the longer I stay high raw or all raw.

Is anyone a raw foodist, but not Vegan? (eats raw honey, milk, butter, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and fish?) In general, I am more of a TF eater, but for the first two weeks of 2010 I did a 100% raw cleanse (including raw animal products) and felt amazing. I would like to do this again, and wondered if anyone else had done a similar diet, or if I'm totally wacky lol

I'm not strictly vegan all the time. We do a combination of TF and raw here. There was a thread in the general nutrition forum for non vegan raw foodists at one point.

We eat raw honey from time to time. We generally stay away from dairy products though because my husband tends to feel really lousy when he eats dairy. MoonStarFalling, thanks for your sharing your experiences!

I'm vegan but not even close to raw. I'd love to do a high raw diet but it's really tricky with my colitis that reacts horribly when I eat too many raw foods. I've heard of people going into remission on a raw diet but haven't been able to make that work for me (probably due to lack of information and motivation on my part).

However, I am always looking for new raw foods to add to my diet when I can. Sometimes when eating at restaurants, farmer's markets, etc, I will have a nice raw kale salad or coleslaw. They're usually very mildly 'seasoned', but I can't quite figure out the ingredients (a bit of apple cider vinegar? lemon juice? olive oil?).

Does anyone have any guidance? Or any links or recommended books where I can find simple raw recipes? I don't like how complicated some raw recipes can be, I'm looking for some that can be thrown together quickly without a lot of advance preparation (such as soaking, etc). I'm not big on mono meals but don't need anything too complex.

I wanted to answer Nicky a little-I was all raw vegan for almost 2 years and my periods did last at least 4 days for sure. Some days I did have a normal flow but definitely not as heavy as before. I also experienced much less PMS or cramps. Now I am high raw and do use honey and it's pretty much the same, thankfully! I conceived easily while all raw and knew right away. Not really different than the first time. One thing that was different was not getting my period back this second time on raw until my baby was 15 months. The first time it was around 8 months. That was a bonus!

And to fyvel-we dress our kale salad with apple cider vinegar, olive oil, lemon, dulse, salt/pepper. Yummy! Just make sure to really massage the kale. Have you checked out any raw blogs?

I have seen a couple of blogs, but am interested in more if you have any good recommendations!

Thanks for the tips on the kale, I never thought about dulse, what a great idea. I had read some recipes but none of them sounded quite 'right' (ie what I was looking for) but yours sounds right on. Thanks!

I've played with raw eating since about May and I love it when I can make it work.Just by cutting out processed foods and eating way more fresh fruits and veggies I ended up losing 20 lbs over 2 months (I was still eating some meat occassionally.) I discovered through this that I cannot eat dairy! By unintentionally eliminating it and then adding it back in I realized that it is what has been a major factor in my painful acne breakouts and it makes me bloated and gassy. My husband also started eating a more raw/less meat based diet about the same time I did. He also has lost weight and now he says he craves salads. His friend was grilling some steaks one night and my DH turned one day and made a huge salad instead!

Recently I've transitioned to an animal free diet, but I seem to be eating more cooked foods. I'm trying to get back to more raw foods. But I'm currently in Iraq so my options are pretty limited to whatever they have in the dining facility...which is pretty much the same things every.single.day and that gets kind of boring. And not much is actually fresh, you can tell almost all of the "fresh" fruits and vegetables were frozen for shipment. I'm not sure if that counts as raw still. Does anyone know if something that has been freeze dried is still considered raw? I've found freeze dried spinach online and I've been thinking about getting some to make green smoothies.

I think it depends on the temperature the food was dried at. Frozen counts as raw. The enzymes can survive if frozen. Dried counts as raw as long as it's not dried at a temperature above 120-ish degrees. (I think that's the cut off for enzyme survival. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I follow Robyn Openshaw (aka Green Smoothie Girl)'s blog about high raw eating and she freezes fruits and veggies for her smoothies that she will be making during the winter. (The growing season in most of Utah is pretty short, so unless you greenhouse some strawberries, there aren't many other options for fruit.)

As hot and dry as it is in Iraq, I guess you could theoretically make your own dehydrated food using the sun, like Essene bread the way the Essenes made it, although I don't know how that would work in practice. From what I've heard from uncle who did tours of duty in Afghanistan and Kuwait, living in the Middle East is kind of like living in a big dehydrator.

Hey, I'm currently in the process of looking into transitioning my diet to more raw and vegan and was wondering if anyone had any good tips for starter menus/shopping lists?

I was also wondering about detoxing and if you automatically detox switching from a fairly lousy diet to a mostly raw diet quickly and how that will work out with breast feeding. I'd love to do a cleanse (which surprises me as I used to always be very against them) to kick of the diet change but from what I understand, this is a no for nursing.
