What is the best tasting vegan cheese you have come across? Is there a way to make your own vegan cheese? Thank you!

Daiya brand cheeses are the best I've had.

It melts easily and tastes great when cooked. I believe they're working on some more varieties and styles as well.

Daiya has the best texture, but I think the flavor of Sheese is better. You can make your own cheese, ricotta is the easiest, I've done a cashew chevre, and spreadable cheese wiz type thing. Sliceable block cheese is harder, and usually requires ingredients that are more difficult to find, like agar.

For a "cheese" sauce recipe we adore this one:

I haven't tried it yet, but this looks like a good parmesan "cheese" recipe. Also, I've heard subbing sesame seeds for almonds in this recipe is very good as well.

I adore nutritional yeast and was devastated to learn it is a glutamate. Essentially it is MSG.

There's a distinct difference between naturally occurring glutamic acid in yeasts and processed, isolated MSG.

You can make an amazing cheese yourself with cashews, probiotics (just what you buy in pills from the drug store), and water. Google "cashew probiotic cheese" and you will find many exciting links!

Sorry to not comment again until now, but THANK YOU! We love the Daiya and I look forward to trying to make our own. I haven't been able to find Sheese yet, but still looking.

Best vegan cheese sauce!

Mix in a blender:

  • 2 cups brown rice milk
  • 1/4 pototoe starch
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 5 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • chili flakes (optional)

Mix well and then add to a warm pan or pot, bring the cheese sauce to a boil over medium high heat, constantly stiring the whole time!! After it has started to bubble, take off heat and stir til cool. It will thicken and is great on quesadillas, pastas, rice, anything really! My five and eleven year old love it soo much!

When we lived in Chicago, I liked Teese, and I LOVE Tofutti vegan cream cheese.
