I will soon be performing a 1 hour Glucose Tolerance Test
for detection of Gestational Diabetis. The recommended
meal is: 4 oz. Apple Juice + 2 teas. Honey + 1 small apple
or banana. However I am vegan. So, I need a vegan
equivalent to the Honey. I realize I could use maple syrup,
Brown sugar, agave nectar etc., but I want to know how
much to substitute in place of the 2 teas. Honey. I don't want
to throw off the test with the wrong amount of sugar. Also,
I'd like to avoid Agave Nectar, because I no longer consume
it due to it being almost as bad as high fructose corn syrup.
So, how much maple syrup or brown sugar etc. is equal
to 2 teas. Honey???

Thank you !!!

I don't know the answer to your question and would encourage you to be very honest with your HCP about whatever you take (maybe s/he has a suggestion for the vegan issue, too).  Those tests can be pretty sensitive and the results are all dependent on exactly what you eat and how many carbs are in it.  Also, the GTT pre-meal is also dependent on how quickly whatever carbs you eat can be absorbed by your system.  You don't want to play around with a false positive OR a false negative.

Whatever you decide, good luck with your test and pregnancy!

There are 44 calories, 11 grams of carbohydrates in 2 teaspoons of honey. 2 1/2 teaspoons of maple syrup or 2 3/4 teaspoons of sugar will give you the same calories and grams of sugar.

Hi again smile.gif
Thank you for your replies!!!
I had already talked with my midwife
about this. She just told me I could
figure it out by doing my own research.
That's actually why I'm here. Anyhow,
Thank you "catnip" for the measurements!!!
I'll take those into account when doing
the test smile.gif.
Blessed Love,
