Can someone recommend me a cookbook? I don't have a lot of time to cook, nor do I have access to exotic ingredients... but I do crave something a bit fancier from time to time--like a home made veggie burger or a good sauce to go with the meal.
The recipes have to be healthy--but not to the extent that my family won't eat anything I cook!
My favorite cookbook is Veganomicon. I find it to be the most practical one. There are others that focus on quick cooking or are more colorful, but for over all usefulness and if I was just going to own one vegan cookbook, it would be Veganomicon.
Thank you, I saw that one too on amazon. To be honest all the books by her looked great! I don't have a single vegan cookbook and I am really looking forward to getting started with my collection and being able to cook acceptable meals for others. (I cook for myself but mostly other people don't want to eat what I cook.)
I second the Veganomicon. It's my most-turned-to vegan cookbook. I also have her cookbook "The Vegan Brunch" which, honestly, disappointed me a little. I was looking to increase our breakfast menu a little but I found that a good number of the recipes called for soy, which we try to minimize. The "Veganomicon," though, has plenty of variety and everything we've tried has been really tasty.
I second Veganomicon and Appetite for Reduction, which comes with nutrition info for each recipe if you're interested (the vitamin A and C are usually over 100% RDA per serving and the calcium and iron are significant as well, while the total calories per [huge] serving falls between 250 and 400 calories). I also cook a lot from Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson, Clean Start by Terry Walters (happens to be gluten-free, to boot), and Vegan Vittles by Jo Stepaniak (lots of quick yet surprisingly yummy dishes). For desserts, Veganomicon and any of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's other cookbooks that includes dessert recipes are great, as is The Joy of Vegan Baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau.
Wow, so many options. Thanks everyone! Now I can stop spending my evenings searching the internet for vegan recipes. Much more comfy to curl up with a cook book on the sofa!
