OK--how's that for an inflammatory title? Sorry--I thought about how to word this, but am too tired to think of anything else.

I have been a L/O veg. for about 2 months now. I was sick over the weekend & ended up in the ER (DH made me go). I was throwing up, light-headed, headache, dizzy & just generally feeling spacy, weird, and horrible. They did a ton of tests & everything came up negative. DH is concerned that it is related to my switch to vegetarianism. Is this even possible?

I myself am thinking it is a non-related anxiety issue, but he wanted me to ask.

I would say doubtful since you are getting animal protien. I mean, I might understand the argument if you had gone vegan, but even then.....

I know when I went veg I made the unconcious mistake of eatin much more cooked processed food (You know---you're out and everyone has steak and you end up with a big bowl of cheesy pasta) I not only could not lose weight but I had lots of intestinal problems (For the record I am not a vegetarian now, but it;s just a personal thing, I still think you can totally do veg either in a healthy or unhealthy way...)

I would make sure you are : A-getting enough of all the stuff you need, vitamins, minerals, water etc. Really examine your diet and how balanced it is. B- Excercise! I don't know, maybe you do already, but I know alot of health issues I had disappeared once I started moderately exercising.

HTH! Good Luck

The only ways I can see that vegetarianism could be making you sick are:
1. You have started eating a vegetable that you didn't eat before, or that you used to eat in much smaller quantities, and you're allergic to it.
2. You've been eating a whole lot of cheese and eggs to "be sure of getting enough protein" whereas when you were eating meat it was mostly very lean, and your body is unable to handle so much fat and cholesterol. That's how my friend gained weight when she went vegetarian! But I don't think that could make you SO sick!

Hope you feel better soon!

Yes, it's possible. My heart symptoms are worse when I'm not eating animal products. Everyone is different and while some might do very good on a vegetarian diet others will not.

I think you have to examine if you're eating a healthy veggie diet. Even then, with so many people eating the junky "Standard American Diet", I don't see how you would be getting so sick that you're throwing up.

You can have your blood tested to make sure that you have the right amounts of nutrients (I did and after years of veganism, it was perfect.) But otherwise, just make sure that you are eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies (at least some raw) and whole grains. Don't just eat pasta and bagels, etc. If you are having a healthy balanced diet and take a multivitamin now and then to supplement, I'm sure it's un-related. The only other diet thing I can think of would be low blood sugar.

Hello, I can't type much right now...got kids calling, but I got very sick when trying to go vegetarian and didn't get better until a while after I switched to a healthier, meat and fat filled diet. Here is a good website to check out: www.beyondveg.com

BTW: Not all the experts and research out there points to meat and cholesterol as unhealthy. It is actually the other way around. Anyway, got to go! Bye!

To clarify better, I actually don't think it is from turning veg--DH just made me promsie I'd look into it.

I have no intention of returning to meat. My reasons for stopping meat are jointly related to health, environment, moral, and other issues. My family still eats meat, however, and I do know that meat can provide health benefits.

Also, as I posted orig., I am still eating eggs and dairy, so I am getting that good ol' animal stuff after all.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. Still think it was something else going on.

I have been veg for going on 8 years. I guess I did the transistion a little slowly, so I don't remember feeling anything but better. Certainly you need to pay attention to your calories and nutrients to feel good no matter what you eat.
I will say though, I have heard of those who have switched experiencing a "detox" or "healing crisis" if you will .
Try some peppermint tea and other stomach soothing remedies maybe.
Feel better!

If it came on suddenly, probably not related to vegetarianism but if you are having some chronic problems, you probably need to look at your diet. Maybe food allergies or intolerances?

Don't know if this relates or not but here's a story....

About a year ago (April), I had a horrible stomach ache. I used to get them fairly often but nothing like this! This was worse. It started off as "ouch" in the evening around 6 or 7 and then as time progressed it got worse. I forget now how long I was in the bathroom, but pretty much from 10 or so until 2. Just having hot and cold flashes, holding my middle, laying on the floor. Turning the heat on (overhead fan) and the dryer (washer and dryer were in the bathroom) and then shutting it all off and needing something cold.... Went on like that till I drove myself to the ER- BAD IDEA! I was so bad when I got into triage that my BP was 60/40! I started to pour sweat, etc. Well hours and hours later- more like days I think- and umpteen million tests- my pulse btw was 133 or something. They thought I was on drugs, having a heart attack, or something! Did EKG, some lung xray, etc. etc. Finally they sent me home with a diagnosis of intestinal infection!

Anyway, where all that is going is that I think my diet and stress were big culprits at the time. I was very overweight and my diet was horrible! My cholesterol was way too high, too. I think that was a big contributing factor. (When I say horrible, I mean pizza, McDonald's, TONS of mozz. cheese "straight", mac 'n cheese, lots and lots of soda pop, coffee every day... I did try to get outside and take the kidst o the park, but I was pretty darned sedendary. On the computer a LOT. (Like where am I now? :LOL )

Now I actually work out 3 times a week- 2 1/2 hours each; judo- and eat very healthfully. I'm finding though that I'm more vegan, then veg. I do drink milk and I will eat salmon, but past that I don't eat meat really. I eat tons of fruit and veg and whole grains. Don't do pop or coffee. Do do the occasional tea. (Real tea, not herbal). Anybody got any suggestions? Should I get protein powder? I won't drink it if it has guar gum or partially hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup in it though.

Being an ovo-lacto vegetarian will not make you sick. Sometimes going vegan DOES cause some health issues if folks don't cover all their dietary needs but as you're eating cheese and dairy you should be covered---- unless you're just not eating well in which case it wouldn't matter WHAT type of diet you follow!
