Waitress: "If I ate like you, I would shoot myself."
I am vegan by choice and gluten free due to digestion issues. I feel SO GOOD and love to cook, eat, feed others, and support local healthy food places.. I am a passionate alternative-foodie type. I wish everyone else was too.. But they aren't. It's a big world and we vary, and so, ok.

So I was out to lunch today with 2 of my kids and my mom, having a wonderful rainy day at the movies and then out to eat. We were in an upscale cafe that seemed to have many choices at first.. a whole gluten free section to the menu, that's a good start. They had a nice looking flatbread option with garlic, olives, red onion, tomato.. and I was HUNGRY, man! I ordered the flatbread and requested they leave off the mozz and feta, no big deal, right? My waitress was visibly flabbergasted by my order.
"So, you need the gluten free, but you don't want me to put any cheese or chicken on it?" {the original entree did not even list chicken!}.
"Yeah, nothing from an animal, just the veggies". I am used to this conversation when out. It usually ends there.

"NOTHING from an animal AND gluten free!? What do you do that by choice or do you have allergies or something??" {loud voice, people at next table looking over as if I had just peed on the floor}...

I looked at her flatly and said, "By choice." and stared at her with no expression.

"Wow, I would shoot myself if I ate like you I mean, gluten free I can understand but nothing from an animal no way could I do that ba hahahaha!"

She was obtuse and I think she was just trying to be weirdly social. To keep from being really mean, I just kept my face and mouth still and stared at her until she left.
I have multiple food allergies and the vegan thing is my choice. It's great to be able to make a positive choice rather dwell upon restrictions. The cluelessness of others is tiring, however, and this woman was rude. I don't gape at people and make comments as they down their burgers and fries; I respect their choice. Oy vey.:shrug

I am not vegetarian but that was so rude of the waitress. You want to eat it the way you like it. I hope you gave her a lower tip for being rude.

I have a few family members that are gluten free and vegan. They feel healthier and we always make sure we have several vegan gluten free options.

Yikes. Sounds like she could use some sensitivity training. I actually had a Dr turn his nose up at my breakfast one morning (I work at a hospital)- a green smoothie that was sitting on my table. He said something like "ewwwww, gross. What the hell is that?!"
Smh, people!

Holy rude! And if front your kids no less. But at least you handled it well and it will be a good example for them of how to handle similar comments in the future. We're gluten/dairy/soy free for health reasons - not allergy but sensitivity. And we don't go out often because it's so hard to be 100% sure of ingredients and I've found some places take it much more serious than others. But My LO is 2.5 and still doesn't comprehend her sensitivities so I have to speak up for her and some people have commented about "oh, well what can she eat" *snarky tone* or "OMG that must suck". I'm trying to use it as an opportunity to put a positive spin on our eating habits and I for one love that she will eat any veggie I give her. But even that can draw negative attention..."wow she actually eats broccoli?" :duh Some people just shouldn't talk! You're response was great even if her manner was less than stellar so kuddos to you!
