I lost 10 pounds earlier this year and in my experimenting with foods to see which made me gain, I was surprised to find that I could eat pretty copious amounts of nuts and natural but butters and not gain. I mean there were times I was eating huge amounts of almonds and was expecting to see weight gain, but I either stayed the same or lost. What has your experience been?

I have never noticed any weight gain due to nuts. I am pretty consistant with my weight, but I do have problems fitting into my clothes when I lethargic and do not exercise regularly in the winter.

Oh, and I remember reading an article that said that people that regularly eat nuts tend to have less weight issues because generally they eat healthier than people who do not. Of course, it might depend on what you eat with the nuts. We like ours in curries and stirfries, on their own, and added to snacks like granola.

Ok, this is not an individual question, No, nuts dont make people gain weight.

Nuts contain ghrelin and that causes your brain to think its full way before the food kicks in so actually, nuts cause you to eat less.

They are a helpful dieting tool.

If you think nuts make you gain weght you are probably wrong, and need to look at some other things in your diet.

They don't make me gain. I only eat raw nuts though, not sure if that helps or not?

I have a handful of nuts just about every day. It's a great place for me to get some fats in. I also use them in a variety of ways and recipes. Topping on pizzas, desserts, crusts, ground up as a parm cheese sub, etc. They have not caused any weight gain that I can tell. I eat pretty healthfully though.

Actually I have found they do not make me gain weight. Did you misread the OP?

It makes me kind of sad that nuts are considered "bad" in mainstream diet-thought.

But it's very interesting to read that they suppress the appetite. I have a very low appetite lately, and I eat a lot of nuts and nut butters-- probably 4-5 oz a day.

Oh, I was thinking it was an opinion thing. Its not. Nuts do not make anyone gain weight. Unless mabye they have a food allergy.

I am not sure why anyone would think they do?

There's just a lot of stupid advice out there. I've read so many diet articles/ books telling people to avoid nuts because they are high in fat. And just about everyone in my family thinks nuts are bad for you because they are "high in fat."

I have a friend who really wanted to lose weight but can't cook. I encouraged him to eat nuts and whole wheat (instead of white) and to eat more fruits and veggies. He was very hesitant to eat nuts because they were "high in fat" but he did start eating them and he has lost 30+ pounds this year!

my mom thinks everything high in fat is bad for you. And she just bought a low fat processed pastry.

I was like "Seriously?"

My mom diets on low fat potato chips.

Fat is not the enemy. SATURATED fat and TRANS fat is the enemy.

Olive oil=good
canola oil=good
nuts=good
fish=good (omega 3!)

PS-whole grain. Not whole wheat. Whole wheat doesnt mean anything on the label.

Neither does "natural" LOL

BTW-if you want easy diet stuff. Try weight training. A little muscle eats up alot of fat. Without even trying.

I wish they did make me gain weight! The only thing that's made me gain weight so far was huge amounts of ice cream. Right now I'm underweight, and not willing to go the ice cream route.
