How do you pronounce Vegenaise?

I was in a HFS and asked if they had Vegenaise (the way I pronounce it) and the clerk looked at me funny and said "Oh you mean Vegenaise" (different pronounciation) I realized that I'm not sure how to pronounce some of this stuff that I only read about on the internet.

I pronounce it the vegan way. Apparently it was intended to be pronounced the other way but over the years has been converted to the vegan way. Back when it was first being made vegan was not a common word.

I've always said it with a hard "g", but now that I look at it, that seems wrong. Eh, I'll probably go back and forth, now that I've thought about it.

I see your question has already been answered, but I thought I'd throw in my .02 for pronunciation.

In English, a g followed by an e is almost always a soft g. There are a few exceptions (like "get"), but in general, the rule is a soft g when followed by e. (Same thing for c, incidentally)

I wonder if there is a regional difference as well? We go with the soft g sound here.

The first time I read it online it was misspelled as Veganaise - like a mayonaise for vegans. So I've been pronouncing it like vegan-ayz.

The person at the hfs pronounced it "Veejan a iss" I was in South Carolina.

The people who created it use the soft g like in "veggie." I know them through my work with vegfamily magazine and the vegan cheese.

But I'm sure people recognize it either way who are in the business.

Actually, the soft "g" would be like in "vegan". The hard 'g' sounds like a 'j', as in "veggie".

They do have a whole explanation on the package. I've gone with the soft g for now.
