I've been doing the ETL program and for some reason the past two days after I eat a salad of romaine lettuce, I get a stomach ache. It's a weird type of ache that feels very uncomfortable.

I know this isn't on the plan, but I felt like I needed to eat something to "neutralize" the feeling. So I ate a small piece of dove dark chocolate a little bit after and it actually helped.

What in the world could romaine do to my stomach? Anyone else ever have a problem like this? It's just the weirdest thing and upsetting too because I love having the big salads.

I get the same thing from Spinach. Do you think it might have something to do with the higher iron in them?

It could also be the nitrates that are sprayed on greens like romaine to help "preserve" it.

It is also possible to be allergic to romaine (and other lettuce types). Its a rare-ish allergy but it does exist. As a point of interest, you are more likely to have digestive problems with romaine if you have a ragweed allergy.

Were there cucumbers in your salad? Cucumbers can be hard for some folks to digest. Or maybe try a butter lettuce or a green leaf.

I don't know why, but...lettuce, all types, tend to give me a cramping stomach ache. When I make a salad I use little or no lettuce and basically eat the 'toppings'.
