I know it takes about ten days for the dairy to be completely out of my system. My son is still suffering from painful gas at night after 3 days of no dairy. I'm really not sure what is causing it. What is a good diet for me and him to ensure that he can get some more sleep with less pain? He has seemed to have gas since he was born. Maybe I've needed to be on a more strict diet. I am sad that I haven't been more focused on it, but I am ready now to start eliminating this problem. My son is 15 months old and eats solids.
It may still be the dairy in his system, or he may have other allergies.
My DD has a dairy allergy, and that's all we knew about when she was little, but slowly after doing eliminations we discovered she's also allergic to wheat and soy.
I'm not really sure why kids these days have so many allergies, but I definitely think you did the right thing eliminating the dairy...just give it a few days before you fret about eliminating more, since that can be so overwhelming sometimes.
Have you tried nursing on your back with baby on top of you? This seems to help my gassy baby (7 mos) work things out. Sometimes it's best with her knees off to the side resting on the mattress, other times laying her full length on me works too. It does make her head turn a bit, but she seems to like this position. (My 3 year old also liked this way until about 2.)
Sorry I don't have any thought on the diet, we used a lot of gas drops which I felt ok about since they are ok for newborns.
Thank you all for your advice. I'll try to nurse him differently and stay off of the dairy. If I have some intolerances, can that affect him too? I don't get gas but I do get skin rashes from wheat and tomato. I'm also a little sensitive to dairy but not as much as when I was a teen.
Are you eliminating all dairy or just obvious dairy? For us, we really saw the difference when I eliminated even trace amounts, became a big label reader
I thought I had eliminated all dairy but I just read the ingredients on the bread my mom recently bought and it has non fat milk toward the end of the list. I think he's only had the bread twiceand not much of it. I've been off dairy for 10 days now. I did notice a difference in his waking at night although he still does fuss with gas. My pediatrician said it could be lactose intolerance or IBS. He said he would be intolerant to all lactose including the lactose in breast milk. Also he said the waking at the same time of night could be dreaming. IBS to me is a large umbrella term for everything really. Can babies be intolerant of the lactose in mother's milk? I'm going to try to be more aware of hidden dairy. thanks!!

Since you have a sensitivity or allergy to wheat and tomatoes, I would suspect that those could also be causing problems for your DS. I know that it's difficult to avoid a bunch of food but if you can manage, it might be worthwhile to try eliminating those foods as well.

My pediatrician said the same thing but it's not true (well...very rarely true). If a baby is having trouble with cow's milk then they are most likely having a problem with either whey or casein, not lactose. Lactose intolerance is something that tends to develop later in life when humans pass the point of needing to consume milk.
I hope your babe starts to feel better soon. Good luck to you.
