Our ds, 14 months, isn't the best sleeper. He's always been really restless in his sleep. Since about 9 months, he's just been taking one nap a day. To be happy for the rest of the afternoon and evening, he needs 2-2 1/2 hours of sleep at naptime. Usually about once or twice a week he'll take a nap of this length, and when he wakes up I'll hear him talking or laughing over the monitor and when I get him he's cheerful and ready to go.
But, the other days of the week, he'll wake up crying after only an hour of sleep. Nothing I do will get him back to sleep. I really don't mind the shorter length of his nap, but when he doesn't sleep the full 2-2 1/2 hours, he's cranky, miserable and whiney for the rest of the day. It's so aggrevating to know that he needs more sleep, but he won't give in and take it.
Of course I'm opposed to CIO, and have never used it, but one day I thought maybe I'd let him cry for a few minutes in case he would simmer back down and go to sleep. He cried for seven minutes before I decided it was useless, and spent the rest of the day rubbing his eyes and acting fussy and sleepy.
I'm not sure what the problem is. He goes to bed with a pretty full tummy. The room he sleeps in is in our finished basement. It has no windows, and is completely quiet except for the exhaust fan I leave running in the adjoining bathroom. He is teething pretty badly right now, so maybe that's part of the problem....
but what do I do????? I'm getting frustrated at the poor little guy being miserable all afternoon, when I know that all he needs is another hour of sleep.
Any suggestions, anyone?
