We have recently started putting DS to sleep in a twin-size mattress on the floor of our room. He sleeps there for a few hours and then comes into our bed when he wakes up. He is just one year old, crawling but not walking.
We went to the doctor for his WBV today and when I mentioned the mattress on the floor I got a LOOK and a little lecture about how a) it's going to cause problems as he becomes more mobile, and b) how he needs to be in his own room so we can all get more sleep, and I should ignore him at night because he doesn't need any calories. Of course I didn't tell him that DS spends the rest of the night in our bed!
Ok, I know some (all?) of that is unsolicited parenting advice, but is there any basis in fact? The mobility problem - is there one? Has anyone else done this kind of situation with a toddler this young?
I would put him in a crib for the first part of the night, but he WILL NOT sleep in a crib.
My DD is only four months so I don't have any experience to offer, but what exactly is the problem with your LO being mobile and on a mattress on the floor? Is it that he might crawl around the room while you're asleep? Because if that's all, then just babyproof the room. Obviously you'd still want to be awake, but worst case scenario, the room is still safe...and most likely you'd wake up if your DS wakes, right?
Just not sure what kind of problems your doc is worried about.
Well, that's the question...at the present time it seems to be working because he will just sit up and go "uh uh uh" until I get him. But maybe as he gets a little older he will go off and start exploring...?
The room is mostly babyproofed but I can't figure out how to hide the cord to the alarm clock. He always wants to play with it. That's probably another thread.
Haha, yeah! I don't know anything about babyproofing, although I'm starting to worry about it already...DD is rolling over now and our house is really weird too. Wires and dirty cracks and heaters everywhere.
I've seriously thought about whether moving might be a better option than trying to babyproof this place (it's a rented apt so that is an option). Anyway, I'm eager to hear what other folks say about this, since we'll have the same "problem" (?) once DD is mobile. (She sleeps on our bed, which is a mattress on the floor.)
I'm still puzzled as to what the problem is, though! I understand about falling off a raised bed, but what could possibly be dangerous about a mattress on the floor? I mean, do people just think that babies have to be enclosed in something they can't get out of all the time?
We did this with both kids when they were mobile toddlers. I think it's a great solution, but it varies depending on the kiddo.
DS1 would stay in bed after he was tucked in. He sleep-crawled off the matress sometimes (and one time did manage to impale himself on a heater vent requiring stitches at 2am - kind of a freak accident).
DS2 will not stay in bed unless he's asleep. At least, right now he won't. If he doesn't want to be there, he gets up. I figure the alternative is to put him to bed in a crib where he doesn't want to be and he can't get out, but that seems kind of mean, eh? Besides, he's one of those kids who would just climb out. Now when he wakes up, he just crawls into bed with us (our matress on the floor), and that makes it a lot easier on me
